I need an opinion on a name

My wife and I are expecting our first child and we're having a boy. We both want to call him Jasper but my mother hates the name (to the point of being cruel) as does my wife's grandfather. We are sticking to our guns as we do not think it is their right to decide what our child is called and are sure that they'll get over themselves once the little one is born.
My reason for writing is that I just want some people who don't know us to voice their opinion on the name. We are now worried that we're so determined not to be bullied (seeing as we are grown adults) that we might be making a mistake.
Thanks

Your baby, your name! My MIL (who I love) didn't like DS1's name to the point of calling him by a name of her choosing HmmGrin. We're from different cultures and she was a bit shocked that she wasn't going to get her own way. She now calls DS by the name we gave him too bloody right. FWIW I really like Jasper: I agree with a pp who said it's not "try too hard" and it's not very common. I know loads of little boys but no Jaspers although a close friend would have used it if her DD had been a DS.

Seriously, it's YOUR choice, no one elses.

My mother doesn't really have an alternative, she just doesn't like it. My wife's grandfather wants us to call our son Geoffrey after him.

I personally don't like it as when I hear the name I immediately think of Jasper Carrot and although funny he's not someone I would want to name my children after.

Having said that if you like the name you should go for it, it really is no one else's business. I only gave you my opinion because you asked for it Grin

In fact if someone told me not use a name. I'd use it out of spite

Your baby. Your choice. You can name him Jesus Christ all mighty if you so desire. StAnd firm on it. Your mother had her day naming babies when she had you as did your wife's grandfather when her mum or dad were born. He's going to be the baby's great grand father. To put it politely it's none of his business nor your mothers.

I like it. Go with what you want. I took to heart what a family member said about my fave name and didn't use it, and I regret it.

MargotLovedTom · 02/06/2015 13:18

I think it's more of a dog's name, or v v upper class. Call your son what you want thoug!

CloserToFiftyThanTwenty · 02/06/2015 13:17

It's fine - no strong feelings either way Smile

Do they have alternative suggestions...?

SpendSpendSpend · 02/06/2015 13:17

My mother and several other family members hated dds name which is not a very common name.

Mother tried her best to persuade me to call her a name that she really liked. I was even bribed with a top of the range pram if i obeyed!

Dd is now 2 years old and she still hates the name. I dont give a shit tbh i still love dds name.

wetsnow · 02/06/2015 13:15

DC1 was Jasper till we found out she was dd... Its a nice name.

Stinkersmum · 02/06/2015 13:13

I like it. It's not try hard, it's not common. It's lovely. Smile

Can't see anything wrong with Jasper. I don't love it as it sounds like 'rasping' to me but it isn't a terrible name or anything!

BathshebaDarkstone · 02/06/2015 13:12

Call your son what you want. My DF, when I announced DD1's name (first and middle), said, "wouldn't it be better the other way round?" I burst into tears as I was in the throes of baby blues at the time (4 days). Unfeeling git.
