DH is set on the name Che for a boy, I don't hate it but I'm not that keen on it either. We can't even agree on the pronunciation! I say it with a hard 'ch' sound e.g. chair, cheese and DH with a soft 'sh' e.g. Shay.

I could probably learn to live with it, maybe even like it but which pronunciation is correct? Help please!

Now he is arguing with me over the pronunciation of Chez, says it's a hard CH! I am starting to think he's pulling my bloody leg!

I never knew it should be with a hard 'ch', I always thought it was 'shay'. Well, you learn something new every day.

I'm interested to know how Carl is difficult to pronounce, though.

Vixx I suggested that ( Shay ) but nope, wants the Che spelling.

Soup, he hasn't really made any, said he likes Amanda and Estelle but he didn't come up with them, I was reading names out the book.

If he wants Shay why doesn't he spell it like that? Or even Shae. Everyone is going to say it with the ch sound

The more I think about it, the more I dislike it. Now I need to get rid of the Carl as well, although as a middle name that's not too bad. Maybe get rid of Carl and use Che as a middle name?

Tell him Che Carl, using a sh sound, would be the name of a restaurant (Chez Carl!) not a baby.

Oh yes, SoupDragon, he has heard it with the hard sound and yet insists it should be said with the soft sound. The rest of us are all wrong, don't you know.

I would say it with a hard Ch too.

I dunno, I don't dislike it, but it will be one of those names where people will forever question either 'and how do you say that?' or 'how do you spell that' - it's just a bit awkward and if you're already not entirely keen then it could quickly turn into a big regret once he's born. (if he be a he)

Yes, DH knows who Che Guevara is and that's where he has heard the name. I was aware that it was a nickname rather than a given name.

He's from Yorkshire, I haven't heard anyone else pronounce it with a "sh" here, although I have heard it said that way by Liverpudlian (sp? Sorry Blush ) and Scottish people.

DH also likes the name Carl, which I can't even say properly! So it would be Che Carl if he gets his way.

Now, I got to pretty much choose DDs name although DH didn't really give much input into it anyway, and I foolishly agreed at the time that he could have the say over the name of our next child.

Please let me have a girl! Grin

Che has a hard ch, if you call him Shay but spell it Che he will spend his whole life spelling it for people, and that gets old fast, let me tell you.

Che is a nickname, it means friend or buddy. Che Guevaras name was Ernesto.

I know a few - it's quite popular in my dds primary school - they spell it Shea and pronounce it with the sh as opposed to the c.

I think it would always be pronounced Che by people so you and your DS would spend a lifetime correcting people. Which an be tedious.

Is your DH from somewhere that Che with a Sh is a name?
