Matilda or Imogen?

We have (I think!) narrowed it down to these two names (with Tilly or Immy as nicknames).

Which do you prefer? Middle name is likely to be Florence but that could change so please judge mostly on the first names and what they conjure up for you.

There is some suggestion that Shakespeare actually wrote 'Innogen' and is was mis-copied. I did moot using Innogen at one point but a work colleague said it sounded like an energy company...

How funny. DH also vetoed Imogen because of Imogen Thomas. Not quite the Shakespearean vibe I was going for.

As above, Imogen because there has been an absolute avalanche of Matildas recently. It's like Jessica in the 90s.

We have a Matilda, nickname Tilda. We know no other Tildas but quite a few Tillys.

I love Matilda, nn Tilly. But it's not so popular here in the NE... Don't like imogen much - I know a couple (6mo and 3yo) so possibly the more popular name up in these parts.

I have an Imogen and her friends call her Imo or Mo. Never Immy.

Did is Matilda and we have never come across another one in real life. Lots of Imogen's at her school though.

Both are two of mt favourites but df isnt keen. Id go Matilda I think as its more traditional x

I called dd1 Imogen for a few hours but DH thought it too linked to Imogen Thomas and vetoed.

Matilda is a family name for us but it's ubiquitous here and that put me off.

Imogen is a pretty name, Matilda is clunky but trendy.

Thanks for your comments. Looks like Imogen has the edge although Immy doesn't seem that popular. I was just imagining what people might shorten it to. Not a fan of Genny though only because My best friend is Jenny. Work to do on DH - he much prefers Matilda. I think he connects Imogen to Imogen Thomas. I however connect matilda too much with the book / film.

I have an Imogen. I'm not into nicknames usually, but we've somehow ended up calling her Midge! (only at home I should add - she's Imogen to anyone outside our family. .)

Personally i prefer Matilda. Could always use the french version -Matilde if wanted it slightly different to others who could have the same name.

I love Imogen! Would have been high on my list if DS had been a DD. I don't like Immy though, would use the full name. I'm bored of Matilda and Tilly, there are loads around. Leaving that aside Imogen is much nicer than Matilda.

Imogen is actually more popular than Matilda in the official name stats!

Though I am ignoring those using Tilly as a given name...

Both fine names, but Matilda is extra special to me, and I couldn't give a fig about popularity, perceived popularity etc

I was going to use Matilda if I'd had a girl, it's a lovely name. Imogen is nice, but I've come across loads of Imogens recently - there's three in my son's year at school.

Imogen is lovely. Immy I'm not so keen on as a nickname, but then I'm not a big fan of nicknames anyway.

Matilda is ok, always reminds me of the film. However there's a lovely woman who's about 17 who works with DP called Matilda but everyone calls her Tilda or Tilly, which I also think is sweet.

Both lovely! My friend has one of each. I would perhaps as others have suggested go for Imogen due to the popularity of tillie/matilda
