Glaswegian names

If you are Glaswegian & born in the 70s or 80s, what names did you hear growing up and what would you/have you named your dcs now?

Dp is Glaswegian which I had hoped would give me free rein to use lovely names such as Fergus, Euan, Douglas, Ishbel, Elspeth.. Sadly when I suggest these he looks at me like I've lost the plot (he claimed Ishbel is what a drunk Scot would say for Isobel Confused) and wants to call our dc John Hmm

I would be grateful for some cultural guidance!

I love Elspeth, reminds me of the cartoon, that started with Elspeth and Angus blew on their thistle whistles. The actual name escapes me.

The only name I'd really think of as Glaswegian as opposed to Scottish would be Mungo and that's only because of St Mungo (patron saint of Glasgow).

Isobel is lovely, how about Fiona? Lesley is a female Scottish name, from the surname Leslie (which is also used as the male first name). Lindsay is a unisex Scottish name. Douglas, Stuart, Cameron, Angus etc etc all started as surnames in Scotland.

Thanks all.

Asas - I really like Ally but dp says Alistair (whatever spelling) is "too posh" (ditto Alexander). Will ask about the singing kettle!

Shug and Senga are definitely out.

Very good point re trainspotting!

I'm not Scottish but' Trainspotting' has characters born in the 70's and 80's and they are called Mark/Simon/Daniel/Francis/Davie/Tommy and Carol/Lesley/Nina/Gail/Alison/Kelly. Not what you think of for traditional Scottish names.

My DC have Scottish names like you want and DH has never been to Scotland and I'm from daaaan Saaaaaf!

Shug for a boy.

Yes, Senga for a girl.

ClutterofStarlings · 03/05/2015 17:47

Senga.

Frazer?

Actually laughing aloud. Do NOT call a baby girl Ishbel, it's a nn at best.

I like Euan, Fergus and Douglas. Can't think of many more Glaswegian rather than Scottish names though. Maybe Ally or Norrie???

I like Elspeth. I also like Moira, Morag and Sadie but again those are more granny chic than Glaswegian.

For a laugh get your DP to teach you some Singing Kettle.

And congratulations!
