Unique girls names

Many Brits can't handle it if you go off the beaten path with names as it brings up all the latent class anxiety. If your chosen names have roots in you and your DH's cultures then by all means use them.

One of my dds has a best friend called Kaia here in Germany, her mum is German and her dad American and I think it is very pretty.

We also know an Arietta and an Angelorie.

I would go with Sophia. Friendships can change over time and there is no saying you will be in touch witn her in the future . If you both like it, use it. I'm glad we used the name we wanted for DS despite it being the name of friend's DS. His name is a family name on both sides, we have moved and no longer see friend.

What about Kalani?

Brruk (yes, that spelling) might be nearer 'unique' than Brooke, and, throwing caution to the wind and taking a wild guess, won't be top 100.

I've just searched it and apparently it's too rare to be ranked. 0 people, in the US at least, have this name, according to one site. Sorry I'm not mischief making assuch

Hey guys! What's with all the snobbery against different, made up spellings?

OK, so Alleckssandrah will look odd but how about phonetic spellings, eg Anglicised versions of foreign names? Keeva, for instance. Yes, can completely understand peoples preference for the Gaelic Caoimhe but others may prefer ease of pronunciation. Or Elaina for Elena or even.

I grew up with some beautiful made up names. A lot of you might think they are yuk but as I saw these kids daily their names are as normal to me as Sarah and Claire.

Some names in my school - Danaya, Josephette, Joannie, Taliska.

I don't like Brooke or Kendall at all, they sound very dated already and aren't unique. Of your other two names Talia (spelt that way) is the best.

I take issue with the word unique, here. To achieve uniqueness you'd have to get out the scrabble pieces

Brooke is probably the most palatable to me of those names.

Unique names always sound a bit cheap and made up to me.

Try to aim for something unusual, but something that people will have heard of.

How about Thalia or Thandi?

Hawaiian that wouldn't be too weird/chavy to English ears?

Beyond that a few 'rules of thumb' that might help you understand why you might be getting slightly negative reactions

I would generally stay away from K names (though I think you can get away with the two above as they are simple) as they have a tendency to be regarded as chavy atm. I personally like Kai, but there is Kai Rooney which screws that up. And obviously there are the Kardashians.

Surnames for girls are fashionable but tend to be a bit marmite. They are often regarded as not as 'feminine' which is the really big thing right now (hence all the flower names)

'A' names are generally considered 'on trend' and cool atm.

I think 'L' names are pretty safe choices too.

Names ending in 'i' sound or a hard 'a' sound are also good. (so 'a' rather than 'ia')

Within that I do think its very possible to pick something unusual, with Hawaiian roots, but isn't too out there and not on trend. It does look like Hawaiian names have a lot of sounds that would fit in but be beautiful and different.

I've known a few Brooke's I wouldn't consider it unique.
Any made up name is going to sound chavy you are better to go with a real name that is rarely used.

How about:
Leia - Hawaiian name but same sound as Hebrew Leah (it's on my list!) and a nicer meaning!
Noa - love this but dh doesn't, great Hebrew girls name

Sorry, I'm not a fan of Brooke or Kendall at all. However have you thought of Caela instead of Kailia (it means slender in Gaelic) or Natalia with nn Talia?

I like Talia (I prefer this spelling), or Natalia with Talia for short.

Do you like Elisha? Always reminds me of the Hebrew name Elisheva. Or Sheba? (Elisheba)

Sorry but the desire to spell a name differently is a sort of chavvy cliché (DS-I-L's midwife used to laugh at people working out how to spell their children's names post birth. Not kind of her, but she got so sick of everyone thinking they were being you-neek.)
Just pick a name you love and spell it as classically as you can. I like Kailia and don't know the name. Is it Hawaiian?
Brooke and Kendall are quite common, definitely not unique.

TBH a " unique" ie made up name or a name that isn't really a name is going to sound either what ever " chavvy" is or off the wall celebrity try hard.

If you like Xanthe ( which isn't unique, but is a real beautiful but uncommon name) then go Greek!

All these are interesting a fit with your naming style. THere aren't many ( Ok maybe Uriana ) that wouldn't be fine in the UK

None of the names in the OP are unique. Thalia is nice. Very nice. The others, less so. Kailia sounds made up and Brooke and Kendall are absolutely not names people won't have heard of.

I like to see underused names being used but kre8tiv spellings tend to make the parents look a bit dim, IMHO.

Love the suggestion of Xanthe! You might like Aurora, maybe? Artemis?

I've always liked Talia (I remember the actress Talia Shire in the Godfather films) but I am not keen on your suggested 'novelty' spelling.

All the others are, I think, a bit gimmicky and will date badly.
