I currently expecting our second child and we have just found out that we are expecting a girl!

Adeline was on our list when we had our son three years ago but we went off it a bit at the beginning of this pregnancy. However since finding out she is a she I am considering it again!

What is the general feeling on this name?

Our son has a different but heard of name that is becoming more popular (I think it is in the top 400) and we want something similar for our daughter. I worry that, with the recent release of the film Age of Adaline, this name might boom in popularity and join the beautiful but overused ranks of Ellie, Ava, Evie etc...

We love the shortening Addie and our other names on the list at the moment are:

Juno
Etta
Delilah
Henrietta
Xanthe

It is a nice name, but I'm not that keen simply because it's sounds like Add A Line. I think Adelina or Adelaide are nicer sounding for this reason. Addie is sweet.

I don't think Xanthe would naturally shorten, it's only two syllables as it is. I knew one and it was always Xanthe!

Aurelia is lovely, I would have used it myself but it is too close to a family member's name. Someone use it, please Smile

Adeline is a lovely name. Reminds me of a series of books I read as an early teenager - The Jalna/Whiteoak series written by Mazo de la Roche. The main character in the early books was called Adeline..

Love Adeline, actually heard it on TV (True Blood, the surviving Fae quadruplet was named this) and I loved it even in a thick Southern American accent not my favourite accent thanks to an Ex

It ticks so many boxes for me - pretty, unique without sounding made up or silly, options for shortening (Addie was my choice too) but OH wasn't keen so it didn't even make our list.

I still adore it though and much prefer it to any of your other names!

I'm Welsh - I've never heard of Adara as a name, and I have to say it doesn't sound very Welsh. It's pretty though, if it is a name (from wherever!).

Aderyn is the word for bird. I like it though.

I like Adeline best out of the names you've listed.

I'm really not keen on Delilah because of the way Delilah is portrayed in the bible story of Samson and Delilah.

Adora was She-Ra's real name in the 80s cartoon- would that make you more or less likely to use it?

We pronounce it Ade-leena but we have one or two friends who always say Ade-lina. I'm fairly laid back so it doesn't bother me but I think she will be feisty enough to correct them if it bothers her before too long!

I watch Grimm and one of the characters is called Adeline. We were watching it and I was thinking how much I love that name!

How do you pronounce Aderyn? Is it Adder-in, or Ade-rin? Ade-rin could sound a bit too much like Adrian.

That is interesting that you say that Guin1 as I am half Welsh and I was keen to give this baby a Welsh name in some form (my son has Nye as one of his middle names!). I had forgotten Aderyn and Adara - thank you!

Other names that could give nn Addie are: Adriana, Adele and Adelaide. (Or Adara and Aderyn if you have Welsh connections.)

I've always thought Andorra would be a nice name, after the little Pyrenean country!

Thanks for all the responses. We would pronounce it Adel-line IvoryMadonna, I am not as keen on the 'leen' ending.

It isn't popular at all right now reuset, in fact I was surprised that there were only 21 born in England and Wales in 2013 according to the ONS but it seems like one of those names that would suddenly take off!

Adelina is really lovely thanksamillion, do you pronounce it Ade-leena or Ade-lina?

DH came up with Adora last night, sweet but perhaps a bit 'we-thought-that-she-was-gorgeous-and-we-adore-her-so-we-called-her-Adora!'

I know an Adeline and a Henrietta, both adults. The Adeline's the only one I've ever met (but, of course, I know the song Sweet Adeline)
I'd go for Xanthe though.

My DD is Adelina which obviously I really like as a name! Would it be an option - still the same shortening but less linked to the film?

People always comment that it's a really lovely name.

Adeline is my top name should we have a girl. I think the film might boost it's use slightly but can't see it becoming a popular name.

jennyjenny I don't shorten it, no. I might have slipped into Zan or Zanna as pet names but my eldest is Savannah and often goes by Vannah so it would be a bit much, even with my very ordinarily named DD2 in the middle!
