Sapphire - chavvy or posh?

Debating the name Sapphire with a friend, she puts it firmly in the 'Chardonnay' camp and I consider it posh, more akin to Cordelia or Jacinta. What do you think?

Slightly off topic, but I met a very posh Fuschia Fucshia Fuchsia the other day.

I'm so bored of this English class thing. It's really just a free pass for people with no class to feel good about themselves and look down on other people.

I think it reads as very much not posh unless the Sapphire is visibly and unmistakeably posh enough to carry it off.

I don't care for Topaz but it reminds me of the eccentric stepmother, who liked to commune with nature with naked walks in the countryside, from I Capture the Castle. Sad to hear it has the 'common' tag

The ee sound was foreign and suspect in my youth. I went to a school with a lot of sophy/sophies with handles and they were all Soph-I- a.

My granny and my other granny's mates were Mar-I-as.

But it was never Victor I a....

Sapphira is at least biblicaL. There is an unfortunate story: she and her husband Ananias lied and came to a Bad End.

I've always thought that Emerald was a social climber's name and was delighted to be proved right when I discovered that Emerald Cunard had chosen it as she didn't like her original one.

I'm sorry, I still think of Ruby and Pearl and Beryl in those terms, even though I know people with those names who are def. not house maids. Ellen also. Elsie on the edge.

It's odd, isn't it? Ruby and Pearl are now completely different socioeconomic groups to Diamond and Sapphire. But not long ago, Ruby and Pearl were definitely kitchen maids with their friend Beryl. Diamond and Sapphire have always been what Ruby and Pearl called themselves when they became chorus girls.........

Despite being a jewel name, it does have different socio-economic connotations to Ruby or Pearl. So does Diamond. Not sure why.

Lots of people probably think it's common/ chavvy (can't stand that word), I think they are mean spirited!

Saffron nn Saffy might hit the biill but be more arty middle/class/posh than Sapphire.

See I would say it was swinging towards the posh but I'm clearly a minority. Maybe Saphira or Sephy I'm not sure what else is similar but with a different perception. What did you decide?!
