will this be stepping on sil's toes?

Her 7 year old dd is Jessica, nn Jess.

But I like the name Jessamy.

Is this too close?

Would you be peed off if you were SIL? She's too polite to say no but don't want to offend her.

I would use it. DH has 2 cousins and a niece all with the same name - never been an issue.

As Jessamy is traditionally a boy's name, I think giving it to a girl would look far too pointed.

nn Sammy? I wouldn't use it, there are so many names and I agree above, many nicer ones too.

Yes, it would be silly to use what will be the same name (clearly both are going to be called Jess for most of the time) when there are so many hundreds of names out there.

I would use it. It's bonkers that people get cross about this. I have the same name as my cousin and all is fine.

I wanted to call my dd Bo for a bit whilst pg, sil had DS a few month's before and called him Joe, i knew they would both being going out and on holiday with granny and could see her shouting Joe, Bo, Joe, Bo......

I don't get why somebody would be upset or offended. People used to see it as a compliment if anything. When did it change?

My great-grandma was invited by her best friend to name my grandma after her daughter. Grandma was the youngest, and GGM had run out of names, so her friend said "Why don't you call her Susan after my little girl, and then we will both have a Susan, and they can be best friends" - which they were.

There are cousins in my family called Ella, Ellie and Elodie...no issue at all. I would use it if you love it.

Yeah sorry I would steer clear. Way too similar. Plus if she's too polite to say no, you'll always worry you've upset her.

My name is Cerys and my cousin is called Ceri... It's a bit of a nightmare at family gatherings when we both respond to "Cer", but it certainly doesn't bother us, or anyone else in the family.

If I was your SIL it wouldn't bother me at all and I wouldn't be offended. I suspect I'll be in the minority though.

Wouldn't do it, the names are soooo similar and it's a close connection (ie not third cousin twice removed).

If you really want the name then I think you've 2 options.

1 - use the name and don't worry
2 - run it by sil

Fwiw, I have 2 cousins called Stephen and 2 called Philip. I do have lots of cousins but it has never caused any problems in the family.

Yes, I think it's too close. You're going to end up calling Jessamy 'Jess' - and everytime you're together and someone in the family calls 'Jess' both children are going to look round.
