Hi, as the title says, which spelling please. I think Lilly but thought I'd check I'm in the majority. The last one I'd never thought of till I saw it on a names list.

Thanks.

If you have no reason to use another spelling then it would be Lily like the flower. One of my middle names is Lillie and if I had a daughter I would have considered using it as a first name with this spelling, however it is a family name. I am named after this guy which I think is kind of cool as I am a scientist too.

I am usually a complete purist about name spellings BUT I do prefer Lilly.

Blahia · 26/04/2015 13:43

Lily. Definitely .

whatsagoodusername · 26/04/2015 12:44

There are loads of Lillys in my family - nearly all Lillians though. So I'd say it depends on if you are naming DD for a flower or not.

BrucieTheShark · 26/04/2015 12:22

Ah thanks Unusual, I hadn't thought of Lillian, will be more forgiving. Maybe.

BrucieTheShark · 26/04/2015 12:21

It's Lily for me. Can't stand the other ones tbh. I don't get why people change it, it's beautiful.

Definitely Lily for me.

TyrannosaurusBex · 26/04/2015 10:05

Oh, please Lily like the flower! Yesterday I had a Lili and a Lillie at DD3's party, and I have a Lilli coming over tomorrow!

Ha, it's ok, the more I read this the more I see it should be Lily! So glad I asked!

Sorry, OP I missed you latest post.

IsItUnusual · 26/04/2015 09:52

Also, I am not sure but I think the spelling Lilly is from Lillian (i.e. it was originally only used as a nickname). It's your choice and they're all ok spellings but I think Lily would be the easiest as it's what most people would write, so you can do less correcting.

IsItUnusual · 26/04/2015 09:49

Lily definitely.

Lilly to me always looks wrong.

And Lillie feels like a nickname. But maybe that's because I knew a girl called Emily who shortened her name to Lillie.

For the name I would spell it like the flower.

Hakluyt · 26/04/2015 08:35

It's a lovely name. We would have used it, but our names have to sound good in a very broad Yorkshire accent, and I didn't like the way Lily would have sounded in Bradford!

BlueBee · 26/04/2015 08:21

Ahhhh, well that's sounding like I really do have the wrong spelling then. I'm so glad I asked! I don't know any Lily's so never really thought about it before. Thank you!

Never spell a name in a way that will mean your child saying "No, Lily with a double L" every day of her life. Some names do have alternative spellings their owners have to life with- don't create one where there is no need!

SanityClause · 26/04/2015 08:07

Lily, like the flower. That's what the name is - a flower name.

Lilly makes me think of the coffee brand (Illy).

DS went to school with a girl called Lilie, which looks like Lie-lee to me. (Not that I was rude enough to say that to her, or her parents.)

I have an ordinary name, spelled in an unusual way. It is a PITA. It's not like having a name that can be spelled a couple of different ways, like Elisabeth/Elizabeth. You have to spell it out, all the time, and people constantly get it wrong, so you don't get emails, etc.
