Isabelle/bella/issy/izzy is very popular here though, and there are a few Evies. Does it matter how popular a name is if you like it though?!

Keep your hair on swan we are entitled to our (anonymous) opinions I am super polite when introduced to yet another baby eve. Yet I reserve the right to think popular names are dull and unimaginative. And yes I have one myself.

There are a billion and one Lexies, but less Alexas. I think it's very common in the US at the moment, but slightly less so over here.

I'm in Plymouth. Hear a lot of Lily, Summer, Lacey and Poppy. All followed by May/Mae/Mai

And Ellie.. Forgot that one. (We're in the East Midlands)

I have a Millie, she's nearly 7 and is genuinely the only one I know she's Even the only one in her school. I purposely chose all of my children's names as they weren't popular, don't get me wrong they're not out there names there aren't droves of them at school. I had a boy around around 6 weeks after Prince George was born, l love his name but went against it for my son thinking it would be the top name. The registra said she had hardly had any George's come through, people were obviously thinking the same thing. He's an Oliver.. (And there will probably be loads of them at school too.. Oh well.. 7/8 ain't bad!)

Tbh though names go in and out of fashion all the time so I wouldn't worry too much about whether you hear it all the time or not, if you like a name go for it.

My sons name is very common in our area and other than him having his surname initial added to his first name in school its never been a problem.

Gosh, aren't people rude?! Liking a popular name makes you unimaginative or says you have 'failed' your child because that child won't be identifiable in class? (erm, I think it's pretty unimaginative not to be able to identify a person with the same name as somebody else. Nicknames, middle names, surnames - it's really not hard!). How funny to make such unimaginative judgments about people based on the names they chose for their children, and then call those people unimaginative.

Children grow into the names you give them. The most out-there names will seem normal on your child once you're used to it. I have never ever met anybody with my name. I like unusual names, and I like my name. My children, however, have names that I would consider classic - one of them is super-fashionable right now and has appeared on this list a few times, and the other is in the top 40 but hasn't appeared on this list at all. They are classic in the sense that they are old names - there have been people with those names in the UK for at least a thousand years, though they have gone in and out of fashion as most names do. And those more 'normal' names seem totally unique on both of my children. They have grown into them and made them their own.

All this agonising over popular or not popular is so often fuelled by lazy snobbery and prejudice. It doesn't matter why you like a name. If it's unusual or common as much, it won't matter, because it will be your child's name and your child will make it as beautiful as it can be.

As others have said, most the names currently fashionable now are not particularly classic and would have been rare 20 years ago. A true classic name for me is something like Lucy, Laura or Catherine.

Evie, Emilia, Ella, Ava, Amelia, Lily, Olivia.

If I hear of a girl being called a very much used name like Ella or Sophie, ten-a-penny I could guess her siblings names too within about three guesses.

People that choose current favourites seem to do so for all of their kids.

DDs preschool has an Ellie, an Ellie-May and an Emily. Tongue twister! And three Rileys, one of which is a girl and two are boys.

Also hear a lot of Sophies.

Funny that somebody said Alice and a Lucy are properly classic names that you never hear at the moment. I agree that they're classics but I know more Alices under five than any other name, and three Lucys too! Meanwhile I have a Grace and have only ever come across one other. Not pretending it's not popular (we knew that when we chose it, weighed up whether it mattered and decided we loved it too much to care) but I'm not surrounded by them at all.

Names I do know several children called include Milly, Isla, Maisie, Ottilie, Molly...and the aforementioned Alice and Lucy!
