What do you think of these names (boys' and girls')

I'm only 22+4 so plenty of time to decide, but what are you opinions on these names?

We aren't finding out the sex. Surname is almost the same as the popular cherry-topped tart from Mr Kipling.

I like alliterative names but am aware that many don't. My all-time favourite boy's name is Henry but we can't use it as a) a family member and friend both have baby Henrys, and b) I don't think it flows with our surname. We're looking for traditional but not overused names.

Boy:
Barnaby (nn Barney) - this is my current favourite, I love the nn Barney.

Alfred (nn Fred) - Dh and I both love this name but worried about how common Fred/Freddie is now and I'm not sure it flows very well with our surname. Also, will people try to call him Alfie (not keen at all)?

William (nn Billy) - perfectly lovely name and goes very well with our surname but feel like it's a bit common/bland and would be a bit of a cop-out.

I also love the nn Bertie (short for Albert, which I’m indifferent about) but I don’t think it’s suitable for past the little boy years really, which is a shame. I know an adult Bert and it always seems like a bit of a silly, cute – albeit lovely – name to me.

Middle names will be George Clifford (or maybe Barnaby George if we don't choose that as a first name).

Girl:
There's really only one contender at the moment.
Penelope - I love Polly as a nn but is the link too tenuous? DH likes nn Penny. Middle name will be Elizabeth.

Hi hellobump, how funny!!

I like Imogen and Tabitha but I used to look after sisters with these names (Immie and Taba) so can't use them. I also love Beatrice but DH says no.

My best friend's son is called George, but it will definitely be a middle name if we have a boy.

I'm glad that Polly is an acceptable nn for Penelope, I love it and don't know any Pollys.

Albert is the only name I like that could be shortened to Bertie but I just don't think Bertie works for a teenager or grown up, it sounds a bit wet, iyswim? Albie would work though. Thanks for sharing your names!

I'm pretty certain we'll got for Barnaby, it has really grown on me that past few weeks and I've really gone off the nn Fred/Freddie (Alfred) as it's so common.

It's so very strange reading your post as Penelope is our definite girls choice (either Nell or Polly as a nn) and Barnaby is the leading contender for a boy with Albert (either Albie or Bertie for a nn) in second place.

Other names I like which therefore you may too(!) I'm guessing

Love Penny and pretty much all your boys names. Very Enid Blyton in a very lovely way. Sorry no help but I do prefer Alfie to Freddie it is so cute.

You can stop that while he is little - you don't even have to tell people his full name, you could just introduce him as Freddie.

But later on, he might prefer to be called Alfie (or some other variation), and that is up to him, not you.

There are lots of names besides Albert that can be shortened to Bert. Hubert, Robert, Bertram, Bertrand, Delbert, Cuthbert, Gilbert, Herbert etc etc
