Agree with others that Harper Addy seems like an abbreviation of Harper Adams University - in fact that's why I opened this thread!

I liked Willow on your old thread, but Penelope sounds nice. She won't be called by her full name that often so unless it's imposssible to say it wouldn't bother me too much.

Not a fan of Jarper as people will think you're a big beckhams fan and the "jokes" will get tiresome.

I think the longer names work better with your surname as then they stand out as first and second names easier

ps Eggrique exactly! even if a woman chooses to take a husband's sur name 30 years from now (and we have to assume that that will be less likely then than it is now ) that is still thirty years with a name that doesn't flow well . And I agree with your other point too, a person's name is their first name and their second name. Unless you're Madonna, Beyoncé or Rhianna then you're going to need a sur name.

At least the Beckhams didn't claim this, they were quoted as saying it was a character off a tv show their boys watched......... Merlin, was it?

Using the name Harper on the grounds that 'it was my favourite book' seems likes its intended to excuse susceptibility to a big American trend. As if to say, no no no, I didn't choose a sur name ending in -er for my daughter because that's a current American trend, no, I chose it because I read a book by Harper Lee. But it just compounds the cringe factor for me. So, of all the books out there, you name your daughter after a book that was on the school syllabus (at one point, for most people).

BifsWif not singling out anybody on this thread but it is something I have read and heard more than once.

There was another book written at the same time from a black girl's perspective. Can anybody remember the name of that book? bonus points if you can....

Mathanxiety is right - Penelope Rose Addy is a beautiful name, that's what I would go for, personally.

Orla is lovely but a bit of a mouthful with your surname.

It was on the curriculum for GCSE English while I was at school, and probably still is. The fact that I read it at school with thousands of other children doesn't make me love the book any less, it just makes it more surprising that the majority of people I've spoken with connect the name Harper to the Beckhams and don't recognise that it's also the name of the author of a very popular and much loved book.

OldFox, you would think that would be the case wouldn't you? Not so in my experience - when we told people we were thinking of naming her Harper, the Beckhams were mentioned significantly more than the book. I think that's the case in this thread also.

To Kill A Mockingbird is my favourite book, so I love the name Harper. I think Harper Rose is lovely. Harper is sort of a sharp sounding name and then balanced by Rose, which is soft sounding. i wouldn't be bothered about the Beckham connection personally and think it works with Addy.

Not sure why that my comment was so very awful! I just don't think first and surnames need to be all perfect matchy matchy. I mean obviously, don't choose something that really clashes or sounds stupid like Iona Carr or Clifford Topp, but most names sound fine together. And I think the most important thing is that you like them separately, as the first name is by itself in the vast majority of speech. I also don't get the middle name matching thing. As long as the initials don't spell something awful then just choose one you like/one to remember a family member Etc.

And her full name is Nelle Harper Lee anyway. Like I said, it's a surname.

Also, it cropped up on my school syllabus and I'm not American. So if people give that name as if to suggest that they are literary it would make me roll my eyes a bit.

Most people would struggle to name 50% of the Beckham's children I think.

I doubt very many people will even remember that there is a Kardashian child called Penelope, most of them have much more memorable (and IMO terrible) names, those are the ones people would think about. All those 'K's and the awful North (poor poor child!).

I woudl still worry about the likelihood of her being known as Penny though, Penny Addy sounds a bit odd - too currency/mathsish for me!

I love Harper, my favourite book growing up was To Kill A Mockingbird, but nobody makes that connection they just think of the Beckhams. If it wasn't for them, that's what our DD (due in 6 weeks) would be called.
