What does everyone think Aoife or Anna for a girl??

Lovely names if your in Ireland but having an Irish name in England has been a nightmare for her, i really didn't think it would be this bad when i named her tbh

My eldest has an Irish name and absolutely hates it, hates telling people it, spelling it and being called a multitude of different names, she want's me to change it by deed pole to the American spelling. It's not even one of the hard one's as its now quite popular. DC 2 and 3 have names which are said as they are written. I really regret using this name especially as she loves the other English names i had for her

Yes if you tell someone your name there are always going to be times/ countries etc were you have to spell your name etc it's not an overly big issues for me to be honest.

Both lovely, prefer Aoife though. I'd love it for my list actually. We're in Northern Ireland and not religious so not sure how taboo it would be to 'pick a side'.. The joy of living her! X

My thoughts exactly!!! If you don't mind me asking what irish names did you use??

I have always liked them and we also thought of Kate yesterday as an option. The more you think of the more difficult it becomes!!

Both gorgeous. As you're in Ireland, the main downside of Aoife is removed, so I'd go for that. Wanted to use it myself actually, but it doesn't go with surname.

As for not liking the idea of having to make things easier for English people, I get that, but equally there are plenty of us with experience of having to spell out our own or our children's names all the time, and it can be quite the irritation. I like Welsh names and gave mine Irish ones, but don't underestimate it. I don't think this is a peculiarly English phenomenon either, I don't suppose I'd fare any better if I lived in France or Japan or anywhere really.

Definitely Aoife. Loverly-sounding name, and because there are a few around in the UK these days (tho' don't worry it doesn't seem to be "trending") so people will know how to spell it.

Anna is one of my least favourite names, as I 'm fond of saying on here! I just don't get the appeal - it's really smug -sounding IMO.

It can be difficult to say some names with their spelling but in my opinion in most cases you verbally tell someone your name and they get it. I think with Aoife it's actually an easy one to say when you hear it. I really do find it hard to choose between them though.

I know you're in Ireland but I hate the attitude on here that one must choose the easiest name for English people.

It's always the same when someone posts about Welsh names too.
