I would be grateful on opinions of the following names for my first baby...

Girl: Lux, Luna, Alaska

Boy: Sonny, Jackson, Austin

OP - your baby, your choice. And we don't all share the same taste in names, which is a very good thing, otherwise the world would be a much duller place. So these are just my thoughts - absolutely no offence intended:

Luna = the Moon. Pretty sound, quite popular; are you happy with the meaning?

Lux = to me, means soap flakes. As you know, the word Lux was Latin for 'light'; Lucy or Lucia share the same origins but are not brand names. And, to me, sound much less ugly, and don't rhyme with the f-word...

Alaska = makes me think of that right-wing US female politician, and of snow and huskies and oil exploration. Sorry, am not a fan of place names as personal names.

Jackson - am not a fan of surnames as first names, either, unless they commemorate a family member. But I think I'm in a minority!

Austin - a good name. I rather prefer the longer versions Augustin or Augustine, but that's just personal taste.

Sonny - fine, but always seems like a nickname rather than a 'real' name.

Drivingnovice · 29/03/2015 10:15

Not keen on the girls names, sorry.
Lux - soap
Luna - looney Luna
Alaska - as in baked.

Sonny I quite like but would it suit a 16 year old teen and older....?
Jackson I like, but would be shortened to jack by all his friends
Austin, makes me think of Austin Powers and old cars.

Sorry, not much help!

ClashCityRocker · 29/03/2015 09:20

Lux makes me think of soap, too sorry.

Luna - too close to loony.

Alaska - I like the sound of it, but assuming you have no associations with the state of Alaska, I'm not keen.

But I love all three of your boys names!

AccidentalAnarchist · 29/03/2015 09:16

Luna - knew a cat called Luna
Lux - soap
Alaska - baked Alaska?!

Jackson - my taste is away from surname for first name. Also I still think of Michael...
Austin - car
Sonny - the only sonny I know is the son of a heroin addict and looks just like him

Sorry Confused

BooChunky · 29/03/2015 09:12

I love Lux, I have done since I read The Virgin Suicides. If this connection doesn't bother you I would go for it.

Jackson is the best boys name.

Penguinotterfoxbadger · 29/03/2015 09:05

1st thoughts are that they are very American and not really to my taste, although Austin is OK.

I'm another one with pretty dull taste in names though, so feel free to ignore!

flipflump · 29/03/2015 08:30

Luna and Austin - great names

Luna and Sonny

Ziglinda · 29/03/2015 07:28

I like Alaska. Not sure about the others
Lux is a hipster name, I think and will date
Sonny sounds like a nickname and would be hard to carry off in middle and old age
Luna - might get teased with Lunatic
I prefer Jack to Jackson

ApplesTheHare · 29/03/2015 07:23

These all all sound very Americana, which might feel a bit stale when not so fashionable in a few years. Good luck finding a name, it's so hard! Thanks

sunflower49 · 29/03/2015 06:45

Love Lux, love Sonny, I also love Austin because I know a lovely one, Jackson only I think if you have an affinity with the place or love a song/thing tied to it. Luna I don't like, not least because I know a fair few strippers/adult entertainment workers who use the name.

Don't like Alaska because it makes me think of baked Alaska.

shakemysilliesout · 29/03/2015 06:30

Lux- isn't that a skincare brand?
Luna- ok but a hit periody for me, makes me think of the word lunatic
Alaska- not sure

Jackson- tolerable but why not jack?
Austin- like
Sonny- feels very nicknamey

Primaryteach87 · 29/03/2015 06:24

American sounding (not a bad thibg)
Not sure about sonny (maybe it's because my dad called the brother 'sonny Jim' if he was naughty!).

CaptainAnkles · 29/03/2015 06:10

I wouldn't choose any of them personally, but if I had to, Luna and Jackson.

OutragedFromLeeds · 29/03/2015 05:59

I don't like any of the girls names, but I think Luna is the least awful. I'm not a fan of word names in general though.

I really like Jackson and Austin. I don't like Sonny.

BitOfFun · 29/03/2015 00:58

I like all of them.

QueenB14 · 29/03/2015 00:57

Love Luna and Sonny Smile

UnderTheDeepBlueSea · 29/03/2015 00:55

Alaska is a lovely name! and so is Austin.

lurkymclurkerson · 29/03/2015 00:33

I like Luna- Alaska just makes me think of the drag queen Alaska Thunderf*ck who was on RuPaul's drag race, sorry! She's very fabulous though ;)

BikeRunSki · 29/03/2015 00:27

Luna and Austin

shitebag · 29/03/2015 00:25

I don't like any of them, but I have quite boring taste in names so ignore me :o

Belazu84 · 29/03/2015 00:23

Like Luna and Sonny.

Love the sound of Alaska actually, but would need a special connection to the place I think.

Blahia · 28/03/2015 21:16

Love Luna!
Love Lux -but only as a middle name
Not sure about Alaska -it sounds lovely, but I can't stop thinking about.... Well, Alaska!!

The boys names sound very American to me (not meant as a bad thing, that's just what pops into my head when I hear them)

CMOTGilbertBlythe · 28/03/2015 21:16

I like all your choices. I recently met someone named Alaska, it really suited her.
