Sally or Tamsin

We're expecting DC1 and I'm considering both the above names if it's a girl.

Also like Orla and Connie, but these have both been "taken" by friends recently.

I like 2-syllable names that are unusual but known. Surname is three syllables starting with P.

My worry with Tamsin is that it will become "Tam" or "Tammy". Does anyone know any Tamsins that became "shortened"?

I think of Sally from Home And Away (is she still in it these days?). I don't like or dislike it, its sounds bland to my ears.

The two names are so different, they belong in different lists to me iykwim. I'm finding it hard to reconcile the two.

I'm Tamzin. Never shortened by family and friends. Occasionally mispronounced as Tazmin.

A couple of people shortened it to Taz and one boss called me Tammy.

I disliked it in my teens, but love it now as I only know of one other.

I don't like either but wanted to suggest Yasmine instead of Tasmin. Tamara is lovely too

Sally is actually a top 100 name in Sweden, having broken into the rankings for the first time ever last year. Olympic gold medalist Sally Pearson is an excellent example of one. Oh and Sally Ride, first American woman in space - not too bad!

I was trying to figure out why Tamsin sounded Australian. Did I know any Aussie Tamsins? No... Lightbulb. I was thinking of Tasmania.

I prefer Tamsin.
I know one and she is mostly known as Tamsin but it does get shorted to Tam sometimes (though never Tammy).

I like Tamara as mentioned above, or Tasmin. ..

Oh, and there were three Tamsins in my class at Secondary School in London so I was still "TamsinC" for 7 years despite it being unusual when I was named it! It's a bit more common here

Yes makes sense. Plus most of our reactions to names, if they're not ugly sounding, are down to people we have known that bear them. I was picked on by an Annabel at school, so that'll always be a mean name to me, for example! I shall have to just be ultra glamorous to make up for all the frumpy Sally's out there. (I do try)

I'm a Tamsin! It never gets shortened BUT it does get mis-pronounced and mis-spelt constantly to Tasmin. I've had it all my life. In fact, my Midwife even wrote it on my MATB1 form as that recently! I shrug it off now but you might want to consider it

It may be a regional thing? For example I seen a discussion on here about the name Logan and some were saying it is a chavvy name where they are and others saying it was quite posh. I've only known frumpy Sally's so that's what I see when I think of the name, same as names like Wendy and Fiona. That's not to say this is the case everywhere, maybe just where I am.

Nah I'm not really offended. Suprised though. I really like my name and I've only ever had people say it's a lovely one. Maybe they're all boaking behind my back though . Don't get what's horrid about it though - it's not a particularly ugly/harsh sounding one or one that sounds like something else nasty... Know about 4 other Sally's in their early 30's so not exclusively old-fashioned... To say it's the worst heard so far on Mumsnet (and there have been some horrors) is quite a statement!

I know a Tamsin who says it's frequently mispronounced - it was even 'Tasmin' at her graduation :-(

Despite that, I quite like it and much prefer it to Sally, which conjures up a jolly, fat school dinner lady in her fifties to me (sorry to any Sallys on the thread...).
