Hey,
My partner and I are thinking of baby names and currently have for a girl; Aurora and Auraelia, and for a boy; Atlas and Otis. We definitely want something unusual, I'm not sure about Aurora as its sleeping beauty's name!!

I'd love to hear some opinions

I have a friend called Aurelia. Do you know the history of the name? Its the mother of Julius Ceasar and all the women in the family line get called it.

I like the story of the name, and obviously my friend, so I'm bias.

However, Aurora is not used beyond Sleeping Beauty is it? I would struggle with that.

Aurora and Auraelia are far too 'frilly' for my tastes. Perfectly fine names though.

I don't like Atlas....it's too much. Love Otis though. I know a couple and they're both gorgeous, so good connotations.

I love Aurora! Much prefer it to Aurelia. And I prefer Otis to Atlas.

I like Aurelia (this spelling) and Otis, not keen on the others. Not even sure Atlas is a real name - it's a bit out there for me.

My godmothers name is Aurora, but she shortens it to Rory. I like it!

Aurelia is lovely but I've never seen it with the spelling you have used before?

Not so keen on Aurora.

Otis is okay.

Not keen on Atlas. I know the myth but...an Atlas is a thing not a name to most people.

Thank you @fizzy for the story! I do like Aurora, but I don't know if I can get past the sleeping beauty thing....

I kind of like Auraelia as it could be shortened to Rae, which I love!

The fact that no one is keen onAtlas makes me like it even more Grin

Atlas makes me think of:

The myth
The book
The sky one gladiator

I like all the other suggestions.

I was in a restaurant a few months ago and there was a 6 year old boy called Atlas there.

Greek mythology for those who have "never heard of it"

I think he held up the world...?

He carried the world on his shoulders, as a punishment. That's the only thing I'm not so keen about, I wouldnt want my child to feel he had the weight of the world on his shoulders! But I do love the name! And I'd like to give him my partners name as a middle name- Isaiah.

I love Aurelia, but I have never seen the Auraelia spelling. I like Otis but couldn't get past the Aardvark I'm afraid.

I know Atlas is a real name from Greek mythology.

But I also know that most people are going to think "book of maps" if they hear it. That would put me off Atlas as a name.

I don't like the spelling Auraelia - I thought the second 'a' was a typo until I saw your update - but the other names sound okay to me.

Apparently there were 12 babies names Atlas born in 2013.

I know the Greek mythology, but still not sure it's a real name. If you love it though - go for it. I've read much, much worse on here ...

Love both your girl names, like Otis, but not so sure about Atlas.

One of the most beautiful people (physically and personality wise) I ever met is called Aurora, a name all about beauty I think.

I usualy only mention the names that I do like, but I'll make an exception here. I know an Aurora. People have a hard time saying her name. It is uncomfotable and when ever I hear it it's like the person has a a hot potato in their mouth or a speech impediment. Rarely used here, it's associated with the tragic death of a child after v severe neglect and abuse by her family.

But Aurelia is v nice and I love Atlas

I've said this before on some of the numerous threads about Aurora and Aurelia, Aurora sounds like a dog chewing a toffee and Aurelia reminds me of nipples, so on that basis I don't like either. Otis is fine but is a bit of a dog's name and there are a lot of nicer names than Atlas in the world.

I actually quite like unusual names but I'm not struck on your list - sorry :(

In Roman mythology, Aurora means 'dawn'. She was always described as having 'rosy fingers'.

As earlier poster said, Aurelia is a well-known and noble Roman name. Today, in some places, it is pronounced Ow-ray-lee-ah, but please don't spoil a nice and dignified name with a 'yooneek' spelling.

I'm afraid Otis just makes me think of lifts.

In Greek mythology, Atlas was a Titan (earlier, second rank god) who rebelled aganst the 'top' gods of Olympus, and was punished, as earlier poster also said. It's a perfectly good name and I quite like it, though some people will make jokes about books and maps.

Possibly I would worry about bullying with Atlas (to a child unfamiliar with mythology it might seem like being called Dictionary or Textbook!) But then children get used to each other's unusual names pretty quickly so might not be a problem anyway.

Yes, I'm thinking that kids aren't really taught about Atlases at school, probably more like Google Earth instead! ??

Atlases (as in books of maps) aren't extinct quite yet.
