I used to love aurora when I was a kid...once upon time I would have said it was ludicrous but I've seen it mentioned a few times on birth boards so seems to be getting a bit more main stream. that would make me warm to it but if you want something very different. aurelia makes me think of the girl in love actually

Hmm I quite like Atlas! Otis is a bit aardvark for me too. Aurelia is nice (better than Aurelie which just sounds like orally) but agree with pp it does remind me of nipples!

Aurora I used to think I really liked but a friend has used it and it just seems too much for a real little girl? I'm not sure. Wasn't expecting it to sound try hard but it does when she says it?

It was a name before a book, yes. I suspect many people won't know that but if that doesn't bother you then go for it.

Mercedes was a name before it was a car. DH said that the car was named after the daughter of the man who made the first mercedes cars.

Your taste is similar to ours were and what we eventually went for. (Aurora and Aurelia were actually my two top girls names. I had the same worry about Disney princesses but I think it depends on where you live and who you mix with as to whether that's an issue)

I wanted DS's name to be different but I was worried about it being too out there. Given the babies I've come across since DS was born (he's 6 months) Atlas would raise eyebrows but would also fit in too as its more on trend than you think. This is the second thread this week where the 'out there' names which some people hate or take the piss out of, have been right up my street. Its one of those marmite things.

Personally I would go with the Aurelia spelling and if you want to use the nickname Rea just use it. Nicknames do not have to follow the spelling of the longer name. Aurelia is one name that people get mixed up spelling as it is so go with the traditional most familiar version.

I would also echo what florascotia says about the build of you family if you go with Atlas.

I the only problem with 'Atlas' might be if your family tend to be of slight and willowy build. Isn't Mr Atlas the name of a big, bulky, strong-man competition?

Atlases (as in books of maps) aren't extinct quite yet.

Possibly I would worry about bullying with Atlas (to a child unfamiliar with mythology it might seem like being called Dictionary or Textbook!) But then children get used to each other's unusual names pretty quickly so might not be a problem anyway.

I like Atlas and Auraelia but spelled Aurelia.

In Roman mythology, Aurora means 'dawn'. She was always described as having 'rosy fingers'.

As earlier poster said, Aurelia is a well-known and noble Roman name. Today, in some places, it is pronounced Ow-ray-lee-ah, but please don't spoil a nice and dignified name with a 'yooneek' spelling.

I'm afraid Otis just makes me think of lifts.

In Greek mythology, Atlas was a Titan (earlier, second rank god) who rebelled aganst the 'top' gods of Olympus, and was punished, as earlier poster also said. It's a perfectly good name and I quite like it, though some people will make jokes about books and maps.

I've said this before on some of the numerous threads about Aurora and Aurelia, Aurora sounds like a dog chewing a toffee and Aurelia reminds me of nipples, so on that basis I don't like either. Otis is fine but is a bit of a dog's name and there are a lot of nicer names than Atlas in the world.

I actually quite like unusual names but I'm not struck on your list - sorry :(

I usualy only mention the names that I do like, but I'll make an exception here. I know an Aurora. People have a hard time saying her name. It is uncomfotable and when ever I hear it it's like the person has a a hot potato in their mouth or a speech impediment. Rarely used here, it's associated with the tragic death of a child after v severe neglect and abuse by her family.

But Aurelia is v nice and I love Atlas

Apparently there were 12 babies names Atlas born in 2013.

But I also know that most people are going to think "book of maps" if they hear it. That would put me off Atlas as a name.

I don't like the spelling Auraelia - I thought the second 'a' was a typo until I saw your update - but the other names sound okay to me.

I love Atlas. Prefer it to Otis.

I love Aurelia, but I have never seen the Auraelia spelling. I like Otis but couldn't get past the Aardvark I'm afraid.
