A pal has named her four children after characters from to kill a mocking bird, atticus is a great name, he's atti for short.

Agree. Whenever people reference Mockingbird I'm always suspicious that they haven't read a book since school. Posh Spice said she named her daughter Harper as TKAM is her favourite book, even though she's famously quoted as saying she's never read a book in her life.

Try too hard = pretentious. Parents trying too hard to create an image/aura of being more cool, intellectual, highly educated, well read, deep thinking than they really are.

DH loves it. He loves the book and wants Atticus for a boy. I do think it's cool but it sounds awful with our surname, and I do agree it's a bit 'try hard' to be honest. Jem is on our boys list as a compromise.

What do I mean by try hard?

It feels like trying to be different/unique because I have never heard it outside mockingbird.

It's feels quite trying hard to be literary because it's a name so closely associated with only one person/ book.

Names like Jeremy (jem) mentioned above feel more like a subtle nod to the character/ book as there are lots more other Jeremys.

Trying hard to what? I don't get this..?! I think most parents try very hard to find a name they love, one that isn't already too widely used, one that sounds good with their surname etc.?

I think Atticus is a fantastic name - strong, cool, not overused, classic, easy to pronounce/spell and a great literary association! What's not to like and, mor importantly, what is try hard about this?
