Rose Elizabeth or Bruce

Basically Rose for a girl or Bruce for a boy.

It's early days but I think I quite like them, thoughts and opinions welcome!!

We've shortlisted Elizabeth Rose (my family are Scottish and both names have family connections!) - I also like Rose Elizabeth, but as you can tell I'm biased!

Not as fond of Bruce tbh, but I say that as someone who lives in London. It may well be more popular North of the border.

Fwiw our boys shortlist is Oliver James, Toby, Jacob and Jenson.

How could a kid not be totally cool with the same name as Batman?
And I assume Robert the Bruce is the Scot connection?

Rose is beautiful, very English though to have both Rose (symbol of England) with Elizabeth (again a very old English name), if I was Scottish I think I would want something slightly more celtic, but that's just because I'm jealous that I can't use any of the gorgeous Scottish names as I simply have no claim to it at all.

Love Bruce, wanted it for ds2 but my partner vetoed it as ds1 is called Ken. Ds2 is Called Frank instead.

Don't let the dogs name thing put you off, I wok with dogs and have seen pretty much every name used on a dog, it's really popular to give them human names now such as Dave, Clive, Brian etc and there are hundreds named Poppy, Megan and Tilly.
I even met one with my name which is a fairly unusual biblical name, bloody ugly thing it was too, a shihtzu with bulging eyes and teeth at every angle!!

Love Bruce. What about Bruce Willis or Brice Lee? I think 80s action hero names should come back, DH vetoed Arnold for our DS but I would totally have gone for it. Sylvester is still a great name, Harrison is very popular now, I like Kurt too. Chuck and Jean Claude maybe not so much though...

I know a lovely, gentle dog called Bruce. Beautiful animal, thick as two planks of wood and starts whimpering if he can't sit directly on your lap - which wouldn't be so bad if he didn't weigh 30kg.

Thanks all, so interesting and really helpful. It seems the consensus for Rose is it's a classic name which some love/like or at worst find boring.

The boring bit doesn't concern me too much as I'd hope the personality of the child would fill it out if that makes sense.

Bruce seems to be causing more gut reactions of dislike. I hadn't made the Australia connection and the my grandad had a dog named Bruce may haunt me! I still like it though, my one concern is that is is probably more commonly known as a surname here, think Robert the Bruce or A slightly more up to date figure Jack Bruce. I had wondered if anyone would mention that but I don't know if it's an obvious surname as a first name.

I still have lots of thinking (& time!) left so will no doubt be back to ask more opinions but so far it's not been as nerve wracking as I thought it might be to ask...even getting compliments on my accent, thanks scarychicken!

I have a personal dislike of Bruce because of someone I know - he was nicknamed Brucellosis because of his appalling behaviour.

Not too many of them in Australia any more, nor Sheila either.

I like Rose but agree there are a lot of them around, although possibly it's more used as a middle name than a first name.

Rose Elizabeth is beautiful and classic, especially in a Scottish accent.

Bruce takes a bit more getting used to as I don't think I know any in RL and it seems a bit Australian /something you'd hear on Neighbours.. Once you get past that though it's actually a nice name. Solid, masculine, unpretentious (all things I like). Again, it would sound good in a Scottish accent (but then most things do!).
