Ariya or Aria? Would you pronounce them the same?

We have decided to name our daughter Aria/Ariya but we are unsure on how we will spell it (pn A-ree-a) We prefer the sp ARIYA but are thinking people may mispronounce it? Which sp do you prefer and would you pn them bith as A-REE-A? x

A-rye-a and Aria (as in how the opera one is pronounced).

When friends family and school hear her name once though will she be forever correcting them though? And if she met somebody new they would HEAR her name not see the spelling. Ariya looked so obvious to me that i didnt even think of a-rye-a but now i keep changing my mind. Aria looks too short imo :/

I would pronounce Aria as a-ree-a (as in the musical terms and expect ah-ree-a to be just as common.

I'd pronounce Ariya as Ah-ri-ya (or Ar-eye-a? not sure best way to write it)

And can see other possibilities too.

I know I'd not have the patience to be forever instructing people on the correct pronunciation, but that might not bother you in the slightest.

Thank you all for your replies we are going to go with Ariya as we originally thought. I think it looks more indian like the indian names priya and riya and they are never misprounced. It is also inbetween arya (indian) and aria (english) and as she will be mixed race ind/eng it is fitting :) Also we dont want the GOT or Opera connection so spelling it Ariya takes that away xx

Ariya is also a name i havent just made it up lol its on most if the common baby name sites such as nameberry, babycentre etc x

Aria is a real name. It's one of my favourites and I think it's easy to spell and pronounce.

The other one just looks like a made up jumble of letters to me.

I have no idea about opera and have never heard of Aria in regards to that. We just like it as a name but would pn the 1st A like the a in apple :/ ive listened to the link but im not american so i wouldnt say it like that anyway lol x

I would pronounce it ah-ree-ah

I like it but the spelling and pronunciation issues would put me off. That and the fact DP is Persian and Arya is a boys name to him.

Ahh ok i see zoobaby, i read it as 'a' (1st syl) 'ri' (2nd syl) and 'a' (3rd syl)

Another who'd say Ahr-ee-uh, as in the music.

The "AR" goes together to make the first syllable, the "I" makes the second syllable and the "A" is the third. I think the author of Game of Thrones uses mostly alternate spellings when referring to real names as it fits with the "olde-world" theme.

I like the musical meaning of Aria too Grin

Ariya reminds me if Aliya (more commonly in the US spelt these days Aaliyah!) and I would pronounce it with the same stresses as Aliya.

Definitely two different pronounciations for me.

Aria - AHR-ee-uh
Ariya - ah-REE-uh

I'd go with the Ariya spelling as I think more people are likely to pronounce that closer to how you like, or at least ask first. Smile

My best friends little girl (2yo) is called Aria, pronounced ah-ree-a. I think it's lovely and I prefer the Aria spelling

Arya isnt an option we dont like it and it is too close to aryan race but i doubt anybody would think we had named her because of that as she will be mixed race my OH is indian x

I like Aria but would say Ah-ree-ah.

I second that Arya from Game of Thrones may well turn out to be a top psycho and given how very current the books are, even with a different spelling, people will make that link.

It is not pronounced a-ree-a, but ah-ree-a.

As for Ariya, I'd assume it was an Indian name if I saw it written on a register and I would have to ask the child how to pronounce it as I wouldn't have a clue.

Yes laquila i think so too it would be pronounced short 'a' sound up here x
