What do you think? Please no comments about the Disney sea witch! We won't be watching that and live a life that takes us abroad etc.

Bernadette was very popular in Ireland......in the 1960's. It's not exactly a popular name these days.

My great grandmother was Ursula- her nn was Lala. It's also a Manx name- the meaning I've read here is 'little wolf' instead of bear.

I have known two Ursulas, both Catholic, both lovely. One was the prettiest girl at school!

Creative kids at my school too but I was never Arseula/ Arseyou love or anything vaguely similar! No awkward nicknames at school, uni or work I am afraid to say! Grin

I'm afraid I agree with those that say that the name Ursula is just not at all attractive. Definitely on a par with Bertha, as the poster said up thread. Some names just aren't a nice sound and this is definitely one of them. However, you obviously don't grimace when you hear it, so if you love it go for it!

I would point out the unfortunate nickname potential though. Kids at my school were creative with rude nicknames. Ursula would've been Arse-u-la, Count Arsula, Arse-you-love and then whatever variants they came up with after that. The buggers.

The one I know is known as Urshie or Ursh. I think it is lovely.

As for nicknames, I have only been (rarely) called Ursie/ Ushi on occasion by very close family and friends. For 99.99% of the time, I am called Ursula. I am delighted that there may be a little Ursula brewing!

Not imo when it's shortened (which usually happens in school ) to 'erse' or 'ursh' .

Marianne is lovely or Anne Marie, there are soo many lovely girls names.
