Just Jed, not short for anything.
What do you think?

To me Jed is a thug.

freerangeeggs · 14/02/2015 20:19

I'm from central Scotland too and it makes me think of the jedhead (tip of the penis - funny that we have a slang word for such a specific area of the body)

pingoose · 09/02/2015 22:10

Jed was the bully in my town who grew up to be a drug dealer.
Also makes me think of the Duggars...so two very different ends of the name spectrum for me!

Wigeon · 09/02/2015 22:04

I would assume you were West Wing fans.

wtffgs · 09/02/2015 22:02

Also taught a Jed - lovely lad and super-bright! Smile

QueenBean · 08/02/2015 18:17

Love Jed. Sounds strong and manly and like the lead character in a crime novel

Making it short for Jeddediah or Jeremy or Josiah makes it horribly wet and religious sounding

PenguinsandtheTantrumofDoom · 08/02/2015 18:15

Josiah Bartlet is Jed because he is Josiah Edward

reuset · 08/02/2015 18:14

That might have been your experience of a proper 'birth certificate name' but you have to think objectively. Your child might like to have that option, rather than not, and being stuck with Jed.

ClementineAndCordelia · 08/02/2015 18:11

Jed's great . Actually so is Ned, Fred, Ted . They're all great boy names so don't be afraid to go for it Smile

Nextwednesday · 08/02/2015 18:02

I don't like it at all. It doesn't sound like a baby's name. A grown macho male might get away with it.

fattymcfatfat · 08/02/2015 17:59

I just think of jedward.....and they are effin annoying

deadwitchproject · 08/02/2015 14:33

I'm not familiar with it as a name in the UK. I think a pp mentioned the Duggars and that it the impression I'm left with, a religious fundamentalist perhaps?

I quite like Josiah though but I can't see how you would get Jed from that?

coldtoe · 08/02/2015 14:00

Or quads... Jed, Ned, Ted and Fred

Jed Bartlet in the West Wing is short for Josiah, which I think is a great name too, but Jed and Ned are fine on their own.

If only you were having boy twins Coldtoe!

coldtoe · 08/02/2015 13:36

I had to google Jed Bartlet. Not seen the west wing (or ever known a donkey called Ned!) so the names don't have these links for me.
I have a 'birth certificate name' and a 'nickname' aka my NAME that I have always been called. If I phoned family and used the full name they wouldn't know who I was because it's not me. I hated having a new teacher at school call me the full name and get cross because I didn't answer. I wasn't being rude but there were girls who had the full name in my class so I assumed the teacher meant them! So will only use a 'full name' if that's what I will actually call my baby.

Nope, don't like it. It looks unfinished and too casual, but then the usual longer 'jed' name alternatives like Gerard and Jedediah aren't the best.

I'd be tempted to use Edward or Edmund for full, or something else

wtffgs · 08/02/2015 13:00

Jed = Jed Bartlet!!!
Ned = a donkey Grin

coldtoe · 08/02/2015 12:59

People who own a Jed or know young ones - would anyone mind sharing sibling names?

OP posts:
coldtoe · 08/02/2015 12:58

At this rate I will never be able to visit Scotland again as Jed and Ned are front runners!

Coldtoe - Central Scotland

twinjocks · 07/02/2015 23:44

Love it (well, it is my DS13's name!!).

AuntieStella · 07/02/2015 22:36

I really would see it as a NN

The ones I know in RL are Jeremy. The silver screen is Jedidiah.

And yes, Jedward.

Sparklingbrook · 07/02/2015 22:33

First thought=Jedward. Sad
