Dorothy, for me, just conjures up images of old ladies, the kind who knit incessantly, and bite chocolates and put them back in the box half-eaten when they realise it's not a soft centre! It also makes me think of cat-loving spinsters. Grin

I love Dorothy and Dorothea but not convinced I'd use it as a bit old fashioned. Have you thought about flipping the words over to Theodora? Still a classic name but maybe a slightly more modern alternative with all the same potential for nicknames that others have suggested.

I know a Dorothy and she's known as Dots. It really suits her and once it's attached to a little person I don't think it matters, as they make the name iyswim

My Mum is Doris - nn Dot, although in later years she's been known as Dottie.

80 + years on, she still hasn't forgiven her mother!

It means a gift from God, I think. I like it very much. I marginally prefer Dorothea but I wonder how many people would pronounce or spell that right.

But you wouldn't have to shorten to Dot, would you? Dorothy is said easily enough or you could shorten to Dorrie? Dorothea could be Thea for short?

Dorothy is lovely, as is Dorothea, which I prefer slightly. What's wrong with old fashioned? I find it refreshing and a nice change from all the fashionable names in the top 10.

I know one and she hates it with a passion. It is really old fashioned in an Enid, Edith, Ethel sort of way. None of which are particularly attractive names.
