How would you pronounce...

Evelyn?

Just curious as I would pronounce it
Eve - Lynn but when I was chatting to DM about girls names she said she would pronounce it Ev - Lynn.

So wise mumsnetters, who is correct??

Evelyn Waugh used the EE-vlin pronunciation. I don't think there are too many males with this name, but this is how it is usually pronounced if the bearer is a man. The same pronunciation can be used for women, but EVV-elyn is never used for men.

You can pronounce it either way. Eev-lyn is certainly not just for boys. (My grandma was one). It makes sense really, as I suppose it can be thought of as an extension of Eve. I find it prettier, myself.

I don't think many people nowadays would actually name a boy Evelyn anyway, (maybe many many years ago they would) as it seems very girly. Although I have heard of Evelyn Waugh, obviously.

Evv-elyn for a girl (with Evie, pronounced Evvie as a NN), Ee-velyn for a boy, as in Ee-velyn Waugh.

Very common name where I am in Scotland for women aged 50ish. I work with 3 - all say Evva-lyn/Evvu-lyn.

I've heard three pronunciations - Ever-lin, Eve-lin and Eva-lin (and now Ev-lin!) but I don't think there's a 'correct' one as such.

Evelyn has two pronunciations but I don't think there's a male pronunciation and a female one.

I have one. We say ev lyn. She does get called eve Lynn by people sometimes.. Not too much of an issue.
It's a beautiful name, we get lots of compliments about it!

I know an Evelyn.
She answers to Ev-Lin not Eve-Lin, she'll correct you if you call her Eve-Lin.
But I'd automatically say Eve-Lin and I think I prefer the way it sounds.

This is the girls name we have chosen for our baby due in april. I've always pronounced it eve-lin but when discussing with friends the other day a few pronounced it ever-lin. I think it is personal preference really. Eve-lin for me
