Front runners are; Alice, Sadie, Elizabeth and Thea. Thoughts?

I spent many years working as a nurse in elderly care. All 4 names could easily fit a group old ladies sitting in the corner of the sitting room...

Alice is a pretty name though :-) Sadie and Thea - NO! Elizabeth is great for shortening but I personally don't like any of the contractions.

Alice wins every time!

Also need to know what efride's dd1 is called as expecting dc2 and need another girl name but Alice is still my favourite and it would be ridiculous to have two Alices...

But I pronounce it Tay-a not tee-a. Which is the Greek way but then I know greek Theas not English ones

I have a Thea. It is getting more popular, it was the second biggest climber in last year's chart but it's still only at 77 or something like that.
To my mind it's definitely pronounced with a 'Th' , a hard T sound should be spelled Tia. (Although some people do pronounce mine as Tia)
So, in short, go with Thea! It's so pretty.

OP I like all the names apart from Sadie. If you go for Thea, I would just have it like that rather than lengthening to Theodora etc.

efride can I ask what your DD1 is called?? We have an Alice and are looking for another girl's name that we like as much!

All nice names. I love Thea (and would pronounce it with a "th" as in Theo)

Could be short for Theodora or indeed Dorothea or Dorothy (Dorothy surely due a renaissance!)

Sadie's OK but I don't love it. Alice has never done anything for me but it's fine. Elizabeth is obv classic and doesn't date.

Thea is a great name (I pronounce it as a shortened version of Theadora) but my niece Martha, is always called Marfa so worth (worf) bearing in mind. For the same reasons I didn't use 'R' names for my boys (think Jonathan Ross) and they both ended up with lisps! Didn't think that one through.

Interesting reading thoughts on Thea. I have a little Thea. A few people have said they really like it, but most people I have to repeat it as they haven't heard of it. Seems to be popping up a lot on here now, so hope it's not getting too popular!

I like Thea, obviously, but I also like Sadie.

I have an Alice and I am head-over-heels in love with her, obviously, and head-over-heels in love with the name. She is DD2 and I wasn't as sure on the name as I was for DD1, but I love it - classic, elegant, funky, strong, and pretty all at the same time.

I think Alice Elizabeth is a BEAUTIFUL name :D

My favourites are Elizabeth and Thea (which I would pronounce TH, as it's a nn for Theadora). Elizabeth is never going to age, it's classic and beautiful and has endless possiblities for nn. Thea is beautiful and strong but has suddenly gained popularity - I wonder if it's due to the Miniaturist? I don't think the Sa sound of Sadie is too similar to Za btw.

Don't like Sadie. It seems like an abbreviation for a longer name and there are far too many ie ending names of both sexes about at the moment.

Like Alice (I have one myself). She is often referred to a whizz or Ali.

Sadie will end up Sade, they probably pronounced Fea and Elizabeth Will be Lizzy so depends which of those you li best.

No I'm not thinking of a completely different name! I have 2 friends who are Thea and both are hard 't'. Just as Theresa is hard 't'. And you pronounce it as you wish I suppose but I don't pronounce names incorrectly just because I'm English! I guess having a 'foreign' name make me a stickler for that. As a teacher I had lots of pupils from outside uk and I didn't force them to say their names in the 'English' way.

Had to post for the first time in ages to tell you that I have a 3yo DS Zachary and 8 mo DD Alice. Obviously I think they go beautifully together Also really like Elizabeth and Thea. You have good taste

I absolutely love Alice, I've not suggested it to DP yet incase he doesn't like it!
I think a pp mentioned Eliza instead of Elizabeth which is lovely and possibly a little less "normal" to keep your DH happy.

Alice and Elizabeth are both lovely classic names. Unlike a pp I think Alice is suitable for a grown up: Alice Walker, Dr Alice Roberts, Alice Arnold are a few non cute Alices that spring to mind.

Sadie is a dogs name to me, sorry, and I don't think it passes the serious grown up test either.

Thea is ok, but i think its a bit trendy at the moment and may date, if that matters to you.

I think Sadie. It is a bit more unusual. I love Alice but think it's gaining in popularity. Elizabeth is a good classic and Thea is pretty but feels like a nickname.

I would rank them like this:

1. Alice is beautiful
2. Elizabeth is nice, and very classic, with a wide choice of shortenings (Beth, Lizzie, Libby, Betty, Eliza, etc)
3. Sadie is nice and quirky in a good way.
4. Thea is fine, you couldn't really object to it.

Like all of them and all of them go with Zachary but Alice is my favourite.

I love Thea but the th sound would put me off.
