Rate these names plz

Thing is, if my child makes friends with a child from a different culture or country, you just accept the name for what it is, I have no basis to judge whether it has a nice meaning or is old fashioned or whatever, I just learn to pronounce it as best I can and that's that. i don't think anyone will judge your child's name on that basis either and kids meet their friends, learn their name and have no idea whether it is an unusual name or not as every time they meet someone it is probablya name they've never heard before.

Diba sounds nice, it's easy to say and easy to spell, I can't see any issue - if you like it then go for it. :)

I was given an unusual name and was teased for it, but if it wasn't my name - it would have been something else :P Only two I've heard of before are Rohan (similar to Rowan & Roan) and Damon. The rest of them, I haven't met anyone with those names (I work with people from a variety of cultures so I presume that they are not extremely common but may be wrong) so don't have any experience of anyone being picked on for it.

I've only ever heard the name Diba in connection with the former empress, Farah Diba. I'm ashamed to say that I know very little about Iranian/Persian politics, but she was a beautiful woman who seems to have had a very unhappy life. Perhaps, with your heritage, the name conveys other meanings? Good or bad - I would not know. Purely based on it's sound, the name Diba would be OK almost anywhere, I think.

The thing is though, that throughout their lifetime you can't predict how their name will be interpreted and taken by others. A name might be cool and unusual now, but really common in 10 years time. Or vise versa. Or there might be a world celebrity with that name at some time in the future. You just can't predict it.

I think all you really need to do is avoid names with already known bad associations, ones that have unfortunate and obvious nicknames/rhymes/initials. Then after that just go with a name that you like and that means something to you.

It's quite difficult to choose when in a different country/different background, so don't let MN put you off!

DH works with a Rohan - the 'h' is pronounced though, it's not like Rowan or Roan. It's more Row-han iyswim. I think it's lovely.

yasi6182 To be honest, I think you should forget about what other people think. You will be saying your DS/DD's name for the rest of your life. It has to be a name that has real meaning to you, that you like and that you think your DC will like too. Don't worry about anyone else!

I think they could all work except Diba (too like Diva).
I went to school with Heeta & Meetra (sisters). So to me those are nice Persian names that I know can work fine in English-speaking cultures.
Rohan = almost Rowen, Welsh name.

I know a WASP Damon ("Day-mon").

Roan is a lovely name :)

Dylan, David and Daniel all in Top 100 in Canada.

There is a similar non Persian ( I presume) name, Darius, which might work too as its a known name in European culture so should work in Canada too. My favourite D boys name would be David.

No, I'm Scottish. I just googled for Persian names,and looked at the Ds. :) Not knowing the culture it's difficult to know whether the names are modern or old fashioned. I picked those two as I liked the sound. Dari would be nice a shortened version for every day use if you do that in your culture. Sorry for the ignorance.

I've never met or heard of a Diba, but it sounds ok and apparently has a nice meaning in Persian. People might mistake it for Diva, which would be a bad name for a baby girl!
