My grandmother's middle name was Elena pronounced Eh-lay-na.

OP I think most people will assume it's spelled Elena which will be an unnecessary headache. Any particular reason you want to spell it that way?

nihatsgirl · 23/01/2015 22:51

Yes Sunshine, it's Pronounced Alaina. It's not made up

The Aleyna I knew was Bosnian

Lunastarfish · 23/01/2015 18:33

I knew a lovely Aleyna growing up. Her name was never shortened.

TheyLearnedFromBrian · 23/01/2015 18:29

Pretty dull! Made up or not.

squoosh · 23/01/2015 16:47

The only Elena I know is Spanish and she pronounces it 'a-lay-na'. Not saying Aleyna is made-up just that it will be a headache in that no one will assume that's how it's spelt.

SunshineAndShadows · 23/01/2015 16:42

Surely Elena is pronounced quite differently though
Isn't Aleyna pronounced like Alaina?
I know the name
Not made up

squoosh · 23/01/2015 11:05

Elena is a lovely name with a beautiful spelling.

Aleyna will be an unnecessary headache.

woffington · 23/01/2015 10:44

Elaina?

Alaina?

Letmeeatcakecakecake · 22/01/2015 20:55

Oh fuck it ignore me I didn't read your name properly! Was wondering why everyone was suggesting Elena!

thanksamillion · 22/01/2015 20:54

It's a really popular Romanian name but usually spelt Alina. My dd is Adelina which is a slight variation on it.

Letmeeatcakecakecake · 22/01/2015 20:54

It's a town in France isn't it? I know someone called Alenya... Everyone calls her... Alenya!

It's a very pretty name!

Only1scoop · 22/01/2015 20:44

I know an Allina it doesn't seem to get shortened though.

nihatsgirl · 22/01/2015 20:42

I don't mind that it looks made up. My name and that of older girls are all made up although spelt phonetically correct

RiverTam · 22/01/2015 20:15

It really does look like it's made up, sorry, like an 'entertaining' spelling of Elena.

scarletforya · 22/01/2015 20:10

To me the 'y' is ugly looking. A bit 'yooneek'....!

Sparklingbrook · 22/01/2015 20:09

If you are prepared for it to be spelt incorrectly the whole time, and her having to spell it out every time.

I agree it looks made up too.

scarletforya · 22/01/2015 20:08

I'd just spell it the regular way, it looks less awkward!

nihatsgirl · 22/01/2015 20:07

Don't like Alison. It's not made up. I prefer unusual rather than traditional names
