OR Sibyl...which is apparently a less commonly used name (although it looks a bit odd to me).

Sibyl is more correct if you care about that sort of thing. Look it up, it comes from the Greek Sibylla, obviously

Sybil looks right to me, with the Y first.

A friend of mine named her baby Sibylla. Lovely name.

I like Sybil or Sibyl spellings. Both equally valid

I like Sybil. Classic, easy to say, underused and feminine. Good choice imo.

Also, people would associate the name with your dd, once they know her, rather than an old sitcom, which they think of now as they don't know any others.

As long as you don't go on to have a Basil, it should be OK.

But as Fawlty Towers shows no sign of leaving its position in the top few most-loved British sitcoms, that's the association a heck of a lot of people will make.

I know a Sybil (she is 11) and I like it. It suits her as well - creative but not overly girly, knows her own mind.

Her mum used to get "Oh. Is that a family name?" a lot at first, but not so much now Grin

Spelling would be Sybil. It's a lovely name but I make a different association than Fawlty Towers or Dowton...
