Is Rory Jack boring?

Dh and I can't agree on anything else really though we do have a short list in case he looks nothing like a Rory (our daughter did not look like the Felicity we planned at all so we would readily choose an alternative for our little boy if needed - though it may take a while to agree!)

Our short list is:

Rory Jack (we both like)
Monty Heath (my favourite... Maybe)
Jamie Jack
Jack Heath
Jack Fenton (his favourite... Maybe)

We both always liked Jack and it's a family name on his side. Fenton he likes but I'm less keen... Even though that's a family name on my side! And does fit well with a Jack.

I just worry Rory will be super popular. Thing is dh says it doesn't matter since he was one of three of his name in his class and it didn't bother him in the slightest! Whereas I am the opposite and got annoyed when more Holly's started appearing!

Am I being silly? Which do you think is best?

Rory Heath.
We like Rory too and Heath is the perfect middle name to match Meadow with a nature theme. Meadow is very different as is Heath so they match well on that front too.

Thanks. Dh just said he wasn't sure about using Heath because he thought the matchingness of Meadow and Heath was a bit weird!!! I told him that the matching was the point... Men!!!

ThereforeI think we are down to:

Rory Jack (despite popular consensus!)
Jack Rowan
Jamie Jack
Jamie Heath (cos I prefer it to Jamie Rowan and I am not sure if I want to risk JJ with Jamie Jack...)

He doesn't like Oakley.

Somehow I think unless he doesn't look like his name he is going to be a Rory Jack... Boring or not!

I love Rory but I'm not fond of Jack - it sounds a bit hard and unfriendly to me somehow. I like the suggestion of Rory Heath, especially as you've already used Meadow as a MN, so the two names would have a "nature" connections without being too obviously matchy.

Rory Silvan was on the list for a while... Problem is I kind find longer names that I like!

Rory Jack is a fab name. Particularly love Rory. If it were me I'd select a different middle name - something longer as suggested above but Rory Jack is still great.

I think Rory, Jamie and Jack are all streets ahead of Evan.

I still like your original Rory Jack best.

After much thought and dh claiming he has no interest in the mn (giving me license to do what I like I'm my opinion!) the short list has become this:

Evan Oakley
Rory Heath
Jamie Rowan
Jack Oakley
Jamie Jack
Jack Rowan
Rory Jack
Evan Jack
Jamie Heath

Our surname is two syllables starting with an F.

It's not a very short shortlist is it?! Jamie, Rory and Jack are the front runners and since our dd keeps saying Rory I think it's likely he will be one of those! I think I'd be happy with a Rory, thanks for your feedback. Evan was on our list ages ago and is undergoing a bit of a resurrection with me. Dh is thinking about it.

Any further thoughts about the rest of the long shortlist?

I have a Rory James. Top name. I'm not sure about any of your middle name choices as none of them seem to flow brilliantly but Rory is a good solid choice. Rory's are ace (ours is nicknamed Roo or Rubix).

I had a Mr Fenton as a teacher at school. He put me off Fenton I'm afraid...but Fenton the dog was a classic!

I know tons of Rorys, all good people.

I really like Heath too.
Jack is fine if a bit dull.
Fenton reminds me of the dog in Richmond Park, 'FEEEEENNNNNNTTTOOOOOOOOOONNNNNNNNNNNN'.

Rory is my favourite boys name. I have a Rory. He's 7, and the name was far less popular then than it is now. I blame Doctor Who! It's top 100 now, but at the bottom end, so still not wildly popular. I love it - it's a good, solid boys name, a bit cool and unusual, but also classic because it's an old fashioned name, but not one that ever dropped out of use so it does't sound twee, which some old fashioned names can (IMO). I'm not keen on Jack as the middle name with it, though. I think a Rory needs a three syllable name at least as a second name. Rory Alexander works, for example.

I like Rory Jack. Hate Jamie Jack. Quite like Fenton.Rory Heath is ok but not Jack Heath.

Also Heath sounds very wild and romantic, makes you conjure up thoughts of windy moors on a stormy night. Perfect opposite to Meadow!

I know a toddler Rory and he really does suit his name. He is called Ro-Ro at home which is just adorable.

I don't love Rory Jack, I think the one-syllable thing makes it hard to use as a middle name. Go for something longer, it'll flow better.

carbolic I just can't get the stupid dog chasing the deer YouTube video out of my head... And dh preferred the name to me because of my problem with this, so now he's not bothered it went! It's a shame in a way because it's just the sort of slightly unusual but not too weird name that I like usually.

That's a lovely idea about finding a meaning that reminds me of her. I will have a think. She was very strong willed and very protective... Maybe I can find something there.

Our daughter is Meadow for a mn and it reminds me of my Grandad who always called me flower, and therefore I grew up calling him Grandad Flower. He would have adored my dd and it makes me smile that the name has that little connection, even if it is just for me Smile

Aw, you took Fenton away! Think this is a lovely name, I really like family surnames for middle names but in my area of Scotland this is quite traditional - not sure about elsewhere. I would love to honour my gran in our DC's name but I know she hates it too - I've thought about using Grace as a middle name (if this one is a DD) instead as she's led a tough life with grace and dignity. Could you use a name that means something you associate with your grandma instead?

Dh just said "what you haven't mentioned is that I don't care about the middle name because it has no meaning to me and is pointless" (he doesn't have one, I do and our dd does - her middle name was a name we both loved but he didn't want to use because he was worried it was weird, so he agreed to have it in the middle). I have told him that I take it then I can choose what I like in the middle! So my new list is... Wink

Jack Heath (lol at Blackheath! Similarly it's why I can't use Monty Jack (cheese!!!) or Jack Rory (Jackanory to me!))

Ahaha I made the list longer, oh dear!

Our dd's middle name is Meadow. I'd love another nature name for ds's middle name. Might start another thread for ideas! Incidentally my grandma died when I was 11 weeks pregnant, I told her about the pregnancy first, 2 days before she died, she was unconscious. I am sure she heard me though because her breathing changed until I told her not to try and talk. Maybe not quite unconscious... Smile Anyway her name was Jetta (though she hated it!) Could I make Jet fit as a middle name with any of those do you think?

Rory is lovely. Getting more popular but not likely to go through the roof I don't think. Jack is already through-the-roof popular to the point of nearly boring (I have one myself before anyone takes offence!) but it's much less common as a middle name. I love Heath from your list... but not Jack Heath, anyone who's ever spent time in London will think Blackheath! I'd vote Rory Heath but Rory Jack has a lovely sound to it too.
