Honesty please!

We're considering Joseph for a boy to be named after a family members. Not sure about Joe or Joey as nicknames; what are your thoughts on Jody?

I know a male jody. Initially I thought it was a girls name, but now i know a male - seems totally normal to me. I like the name

I do know a male Jody, but everyone comments on his having a girls name.

On Jody: I would expect a Jodie to be a girl (Jodie Foster), but have met a young adult male Jody.

I think it's OK if it's a NN. It'll either work or evolve.

On Joey: "Unfortunately it was often not used as 'affectionate ridicule' as per article but as an insult. We are talking the 1970s here so being PC was not common."

According to that Wiki link, it was in the 1980s (I'm a child of 60s and 70s and hadn't heard of this Joey at all, so it might, resonate for those who were primary age then so late 30s/early 40s)

Those my age are more likely to think "girl - Joey Bettany"

I like Joe but OH wouldn't go for it as it was an uncles name that his dad had fallen out with so would upset his mum. Dad had passed away by that point. I've also heard Jose used a lot as nn in Scotland. You could also have Seph?

Caitmous I'm from Australia and the only male Jody I've ever met was English and in London.
Jody is a fairly common, if dated girl's name here.

There were 2 male Jodys in my year at secondary school. Both in my form! And as far as I'm aware it wasn't short for anything.

I can't see how you get Jody from Joseph.

But if I heard Jody I'd assume it was a girl's name.

And I've never heard any negative connatations with Joey - I'd just think "Friends".

I know a really sweet Joe/Joey and an equally lovely Jody who really suits his name.

The Joey deacon stuff is irrelevant.

I think Jody is a common boys' name in Australia.

I know a four year old Joseph nn Joph. Very cute.

Although I'm aware of the connotations of Joey for my generation, you never hear it in the playground these days. Completely gone as a cuss term.

I know a male Jody as well has a female Jodie. I don't particularly like or dislike the name, but it can be used for boys. The Jody I know is just Jody; it's not an abbreviation for anything in his case.

I didn't realise that Jody was a diminutive of Joseph, I thought it was a name in it's own right. I went to school with a Jody, never really thought twice about it.

Danny. Then he can be Dan if he prefers when he's older. That's what we finally decided for our baby after agonising for the last few months. Turned out, she was a girl Grin.

Seriously though, go through the whole how it sounds at different stages of their life, infants, seniors, uni, work etc and choose something that you as a couple think works. Joe is a great name for all of these occasions, just not as great as Danny Grin

Thanks all! I never knew that about name Joey... Can't believe that still applies?!

Still, much food for thought.

I don't love Joseph but finding it hard to get excited about any boys names.. We already have 2 girls and I could think of another hundred girls names but boys names are proving a real challenge.

I don't want something too diminutive, or fashionable ... I want something solid but which also feels warm.

Baby due v soon ... Help! ??

Once he is at school you will have no control over his nn and he will surely become Joe.

No, not Jody.

I'm not wild on Joseph, but it's better than any of the shortenings. If you are going to use it and shorten it, I'd go for J.

I know a Jody who is a northerner. His full name is Jonathan. It's a perfectly lovely name.
