I've just remembered, I work with a Kate, who is actually a Katie. She doesn't like Katie as she feels it is a bit cutesy for an adult and doesn't her any credibility in a professional environment.

I have a Katy

She hates it, always hated the 'y' and now she's a teen says its a baby name

She now goes by Kay

I have a Katie that we shorten to Kate. Although she has told us off and we have to try to remember to use her full name.

Until I joined Mumsnet I didn't know Katie was short fir Katherine.

Kate sounds more formal for an adult and can use Katie/y as the childhood/affectionate form.
