Kate or Katie?

I like both but probably Kate best. If my youngest had been a girl, we had the name Caitlin lined up and was going to shorten it to Cate. I did have some reservations about Cate spelt like that, didn't like the spelling of Kaitlyn with a K and it felt wrong to spell Caitlin with a C but shorten to Kate with a K!

I am Catherine (after grandmother) but always shortened to Katie (am now 34!). I don't like being called Kate as it seems lazy that people can't be bothered to say "ie"!! And I do prefer Katie, never felt it was too young, although I am the only person of my generation I know to be Katie rather that Kate. But that's quite nice!

Definitely Katie. Katie is beautiful, Kate is a bit mumsy. I love old fashioned names but no Kate just sounds boring.

I have a 9 year old Kate and she LOVES it. We have never called her anything else (apart from Kajagoogoo!) and she has only ever had Katie from a couple of teachers. We gave her a long, posh middle name in case she didn't like it, but she thinks it's brilliant. She is confident, with a straight-to-the-point personality and a name to match. :)

I think it's a lovely name - prob prefer Kate. Benefit of a longer name on birth certificate is that it gives more options for the child when they're older.
Weirdly at the moment, in the small village where I live, literally about 50% of my friends are Kate or Katie (all in their thirties) and it was the most popular name at school as in there were about 6 in the year (of 90)

Katie Maria does flow better but how often are you going to say her whole name out loud? Pretty rarely.

I have a Kate and get SO many compliments on her name. It's got potential for an adult, whereas to me Katie is very child-like.

I love Kate, but would always give the proper name even if you're only ever going to call her Kate or Katie, personally!

Also with spelling I know a Katy who her name gets shortened to Kat and she hates it.

I was called Kate or Katie until about 11-12 I would say so 'pre-teen' age I wanted to lose the less 'cutesy' version.

My name is Kate but it's amazing how many people call me Katie and I have to correct them.

To be honest I would have been happy to be named Katie and would probably just say to people 'my names Katie but call me Kate' when making introductions etc.

I'm a Katherine, who was Katie as a child and is now Kate. Slightly annoying when completing official forms I have to use Katherine, and then get called that until I correct people, which is embarrassing for everyone. Just go with Kate and call her Katie while she's little. Don't bother with Katherine unless you intend to use it!

Kate was always my "girls name". When I was pregnant dh said he liked Katie one time. We went for Katherine (IMO Katie is short for Katherine and Katy is short for Kathryn) as it makes it easier to change from one to the other. She's currently Katie (which really suits a 4 year old) but I wonder if she'll become Kate as a teenager (and Katherine as an adult).

But if you dislike Katherine (I prefer Kate / Katie but didn't dislike it) then stick with Kate. Most people don't know that my Katie is really Katherine. And it is always a bit of a pain in the doctors when we sit blankly waiting to be called whilst the doctor goes "Katherine? Katherine?"

No - Kate is an actual name!

My middle name is Louise so I got called Katie Lou when I was younger which I liked.

I think all options are nice but Katherine is too mature for a baby name I think.

I once met a granny called Amy. She suited her 'baby' name and stood out amongst her mates Maud and Beryl.

No need at all for a longer name that you dont like or never intend to use. Sarahs and Claires dont get any choice yet they are seen as proper names. So should Kate imo.

I don't think it's cutesy at all and like you wouldn't want Katherine. I don't understand the obsession with people calling names cutesy when Katie will be growing up with Poppy's and Daisy's x

I'm a Katy. I hated it as a child, because I couldn't imagine being a 30 year old called 'a kids name' (as I saw it). Well, it's done me alright so far, and I now prefer not to shorten it to Kate. My family called me Kate, but no one else is allowed. It doesn't suit me and it's not my name!

My friend is a Kathryn who calls herself Katie, but is called Kate by nearly everyone. At least she has a choice!

I am a Kate! It is a great name, I love it My family uses Katy as a nickname, this works really well
