DH and I can't agree! I've talked myself out of most of these! Finding this naming business really difficult.

I know an Emmeline who is Mina for short.

Rtfairy · 18/12/2014 21:12

I like Evelyn and Ava and Benjamin and Milo from your lists.

Luckystar82 · 12/12/2014 17:37

I also like Evan and Ethan. Boys names are so difficult!

I like Jacob and Charlotte - thanks

Thanks for the feedback everyone, really interesting to read.

That's interesting about Orla gaining in popularity - I thought it was quite unusual. I expect Orla Kiely has something to do with it!

I really like Emmeline and Miles. I think Orla is going to get really popular, I think it's the new Isla.

Timetoask · 12/12/2014 11:23

I really don't like Orla.

My favourites are Evelyn and Milo.

I just came on to say that I have a Ben (not Benjamin) and have only come across two others throughout his time at school - he's 13 now - but I see you've scrapped the name.

I love the name Orla, it is becoming a little more popular though.

Other names are:

Charlotte
Rachel
Leah

Jacob
Seth
Sebastian

Luckystar82 · 12/12/2014 10:47

Thanks for all the replies :)

I'm not due until next summer, very exciting!

Emmeline is top for girls - I like the nn Emmy and Millie. I do worry about people hearing Emily though. Ava, Evelyn are now scrapped due to over-popularity. Orla is second to Emmeline.

Miles is top for boys - I like that Milo could be a nn.
Benjamin is scrapped - DH really doesn't like it.
Milo and Franklin are scrapped now (too childish/ trendy)

We need more names on our list - for 2nd choice and middle names!

Orla - no, I just don't like it
Evelyn - yes, no particular reason, there's one at the DC's school and I think it's lovely. Pronounced Evv-lyn, not Eve-lyn, which I don't like.
Ava - yes, but very popular
Emmeline - no, really old fashioned, people are likely to hear it as Emily, lots of nickname potential though. My least favourite of these.

Boy:

Miles - yes, I like it as it is but it can be shortened to Milo
Milo - very little boy-ish, cute till they're about 5 would be my last choice of these
Benjamin - yes, but there are a lot of them about
Franklin - no but I do like Frank.

ChristmasEveSteve · 11/12/2014 20:50

Emmeline is lovely! How about Benedict for your boys list?

Kitsmummy · 11/12/2014 20:49

I also have an Orla so that would be my choice Grin

MunningCockery · 11/12/2014 20:48

*LIKE me, even.

FFS.Blush

Kitsmummy · 11/12/2014 20:48

Boobz, I have a Kit too, great name

burgatroyd · 11/12/2014 20:48

Emmeline will be mistaken for the more popular Emily.

But its the best out if all your options.

MunningCockery · 11/12/2014 20:47

Surely Emmeline would be shortened to Emmy - not Emma? Children (who usually drive the nn IME) have a tendency to follow the phonic so I suspect your fears re Emma may be misfounded? HTH!

I really love Milo but know it is a bit of a 'marmite' name IYKWIM - some (lie me) LOVE it, others think it's uper snooty and hate it. My considered view is fuck 'em and go with what you wantSmile

Oh, and congrats too BTWFlowers When are you due?

Boobz · 11/12/2014 20:38

Orla - not keen
Evelyn - Really like - I like Ev, Evs or Evie as a nn as well
Ava - too popular
Emmeline - Really like - but yes you do have to worry about the shortening if you don't like Emma

Boy:

Miles - LOVE
Milo - Like, but not as much as Miles
Benjamin - Really like but not unusual enough
Franklin - nope

We have a Kit. I had always thought I would ensure the DC had a "proper long name" (like we do for DDs Penelope and Constance, who we do shorten to Pen and Connie), but in the end I didn't really like Chris, and so if we called him Christopher or Kristian, nn Kit, he might at some point turn into a Chris and I really didn't want that.

So he's just Kit on his passport. Still not sure if we made the right decision..

TheScenicRoute · 11/12/2014 20:00

Evelyn and Miles. X

Kaekae · 11/12/2014 20:00

I don't like Orla, I know a little girl called this and it just sounds harsh. I like Ava but very popular.

CanIBeHappyNow · 11/12/2014 19:58

Like Emmeline and Benjamin the best. Lovely names. Smile

CPtart · 11/12/2014 19:55

Benjamin by a mile for a boy, it was on my shortlist as was Adam, Luke, Evan, Dominic, Lawrence, Edward, Marcus, Zachary, Isaac.

Evelyn is nice for a girl but only in it's entirety, even then it's very similar to all the millions of Eve's, Evie's, Eva's, Ava's.

ataposaurus · 11/12/2014 19:33

If you are worried about popularity, don't pick Ava, it has been top 10 for ages! I find Emmeline a bit fussy personally and not keen on Evelyn, there is a pronounciation issue (Eve - Lyn or Evlyn). Orla is nice. How about Ada (was on our list for ds 2 but was a boy! - similar to Ava but less popular).

I like Milo best of your boys names though it feels quite trendy. Benjamin is ok, very popular. Not keen on Miles or Franklin but I like Frank.

TheGirlAtTheJingleBellRockShow · 11/12/2014 19:26

Evelyn was on our list - so I love it! Emmeline is lovely too.
Of your boys list I like Benjamin, Franklin is ok, as is Miles. Don't like Milo
I think boys names are always harder than girls.

Stumbleine · 11/12/2014 18:48

Emmeline and Miles are both lovely names (and have been on my list three times, only to be vetoed by dh!).
