To think Raya is made up and just awful, after receiving news of a beautiful baby girl. All I can think about is the name?

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Raya is nice to my ears and eyes and I'm quite a traditionalist on naming. The history would persuade me and contrasts with something odd (to my mind!) like Kahleesi. Even with that though you have to admit logically every name was newly minted at some point.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 11/12/2014 11:42

I am often a bitch about baby names. I think Raya is rather nice, (though in my mead I can hear my Dad chuckling, "Raya sunshine", so I probably wouldn't go there personally).

When the poster mentioned Lemoni I instantly thought of Captain Correlli. I don't think it's that out there.

MsMittens · 11/12/2014 11:41

Yes you are being a b*h Wink

My goddaughter's name is Raya and I think it is beautiful and unusual without being made up. It has a Hebrew/Israeli origin and means friend or friend to all depending on what baby name site you look up.

Besides there have to be some people in the world who don't call their DD Amelia, Olivia etc (despite these also being nice names).

Hopefully it will grow on you, and if not, please don't mentioned your dislike of the name to anyone in your social circle in IRL. No good can come of it.

Purpleroxy · 11/12/2014 11:39

I don't know how people think of these names!
It's OK I suppose but not my cup of tea.

squoosh · 11/12/2014 11:36

Raya is hardly in the 'wtf?!' category though is it? Gandalf and Cinderella are names that would make me think 'wtf?!'.

itssangriaoclock · 11/12/2014 11:31

You would have thought so lingdilong

LingDiLong · 11/12/2014 11:24

I think everybody hears a name once in a while where they think - really?! wtf?! Though don't they?

StetsonsAreCool · 11/12/2014 11:18

I wouldn't use it personally, but I think it's really pretty!

As is Lemoni. It's the little girl's name in Captain Corelli's Mandolin, one of my favourite books ever. Again, wouldn't use it myself but I'd have absolutely no problem with anyone else using it.

LingDiLong · 11/12/2014 11:17

Having googled it, it's from a book apparently - Captain Correlli's Mandolin. It still sounds too descriptive to be a name to me though!

itssangriaoclock · 11/12/2014 11:15

Lingdilong lemoni? Really wow that really is a new one on me

As I also know a baby who has just been born called Raya (beautiful ) chances are you have just outed yourself. hope her mum isn't a mumsnetter Sad Sad

mrsfarquhar · 11/12/2014 10:32

I think its lovely and has meaning.

And ofcourse, expressing your opinion on a site as big and ubiquitous as this is very little different to saying it to the new parents themselves so yes you are.

squoosh · 11/12/2014 10:31

I think it sounds quite nice. There are far worse names out there, Harriet for example.

LingDiLong · 11/12/2014 10:10

I like it too, it doesn't sound made up to me either.

I have been known to have similar bitchy moments though. Most recently at my child's Christmas concert yesterday where there was a child listed in the programme as being called 'Lemoni'.

I only bitched in my head though. And on here.

Legionofboom · 11/12/2014 10:07

I've never heard it before but I don't think it sounds 'made up'. More like a shortening for something.

I like it.

aoife24 · 11/12/2014 09:59

It sounds Indian to me rather than made up so perhaps it might be tactful not to express your views openly in case it isn't made up.

burgatroyd · 11/12/2014 09:55

I like it.

TheLeftovermonster · 10/12/2014 23:20

Definitely not made up!

tahunny · 10/12/2014 23:17

It's not that bad compared to some I've seen on bottles of coke

TimelyNameChangey · 10/12/2014 23:15

I quite like it.

NoArmaniNoPunani · 10/12/2014 23:12

Yes you are

MinceSpy · 10/12/2014 23:10

Raya is the Israeli for friend, Greek foe wise guardian or Arabic for wise to all so not a,'made up' name.

PitchWrapped · 10/12/2014 23:04

I think its beautiful, strong and feminine and not too out there

IHeartKingThistle · 10/12/2014 23:00

I know one spelled Reia. I really like it.

Squtternutbaush · 10/12/2014 22:59

I know 2 Raya's.

One is in her 40's and one is in her teens so its definitely not "made up", although that said surely all names were made up and ridiculous at some point?
