To think Raya is made up and just awful, after receiving news of a beautiful baby girl. All I can think about is the name?

Reyer is Dutch, tho poss male

lostinegypt · 15/12/2014 00:01

It is a common name in Egypt. Also spelled Rayah.

badtime · 14/12/2014 09:55

I saw it and thought it might be connected to the lovely Persian name 'Soraya'.

SnoringNorma · 14/12/2014 01:21

I know a very beautiful smart Arabic Reya. It's pretty I think.

Dovahkiin · 13/12/2014 21:43

I know a little Raya - named after a Thai island where her parents married. Doesn't sound too outlandish.

spamanderson · 13/12/2014 18:02

That's the shortened version of my daughters name...... I think it's gorgeous :p

CyclopsBee · 13/12/2014 17:47

I went to school with a girl called Rae-Rae Hmm

Pocketangel · 13/12/2014 14:10

I work in an international school and come across a lot of unusual names that sound 'made-up' but are perfectly 'normal' in other countries. A girl named Tanami (said Tan a my) has been one this year.

eachtigertires · 12/12/2014 22:54

I like it too. And yes you would be a bitch to say anything. But everyone has their opinions and you are also entitled to yours.

fattycow · 12/12/2014 15:43

I like it!

Choccyhobnob · 12/12/2014 15:07

I really like it!

GreatAuntDinah · 11/12/2014 13:34

I think if your first reaction is "made up and awful" rather than "different, might be foreign" you probably do need a word with yourself, yes. Unless the name is Catflap or something.

PeggaPip · 11/12/2014 12:16

Oooh Raya is pretty!

Wassailywassailywassaily · 11/12/2014 12:10

That's the MN effect

Wassailywassailywassaily · 11/12/2014 12:09

It'll be up to 254th next year Grin

OfficerKaren · 11/12/2014 12:07

OP has spread this name's popularity!

squoosh · 11/12/2014 12:06

I could sometimes be referred to as La Moany.

Expedititition · 11/12/2014 12:04

I really like Raya.

Expedititition · 11/12/2014 12:04

I imagine it's pronounced leh mo ni not lemony

itssangriaoclock · 11/12/2014 12:03

Really like that name Rae/Ray/Rai think it's pretty. Maybe that's why Raya doesn't sit right. Because it's a different version of a name I already like and have on my short list?

A Series Of Unfortunate Events *

Wassailywassailywassaily · 11/12/2014 11:59

There s a little girl in DS's class called Rai, initially I did Hmm but it really suits this girl and the name has really grown on me.

Isn't Lemoni from a series of the unfortunate events? As in Lemoni Snickett (sp?)

itssangriaoclock · 11/12/2014 11:54

Thank you lingdilong

Like I've said before I've only expressed an opinion on an anonymous forum.

I don't hate the name or liken it too Cinderella. I agree there are too many of the same names that always pop up. But for some reason Raya just doesn't sound right. It does have a beautiful meaning, I've heard names similar which are Arabic like Roya. Everyone has an opinion on something don't they?

LingDiLong · 11/12/2014 11:51

Squoosh, it's all subjective though isn't it? I don't think Raya is wtf-esque either. I did think Lemoni was though because I haven't read the book it come from - whereas to other people that's an immediately recognisable name!

I think as long as we all do the decent thing and smile and say 'that's a lovely name' and refrain from real life bitching then a little wtf-ing on here won't do any harm. Plus the OP has learned something - the name ISN'T made up!
