Buddy?

What do you think?
We're not in the UK at the moment.
Could a child get away with being called Buddy? We might put this as his middle name and call it him anyway.

Also really like the name Rudi, though it does remind me of the word 'rude'. Which do you prefer?

Not a big fan of Buddy. I can here people saying "hey Bud" just sounds off. I like names that can be shortened ans a nn. My ds is Trevor, or Trev, or my DH calles him "T-Rex" all the time, which he loves.

But pick what you are happy with and the heck with everyone else's opinion. You and your dc have to live with the name.

When are you due? Name picking can drive you nuts. Good luck on finding the fabulous name that make you happy.Grin

And contrary to what people on MN believe , he won't spend every day explaining his name. My Teddy hasn't received anything other than ' oh I LOVE the name ' comments ( or no comment at all ) in 8 years

And Rudi sounds a bit daft if you're English speaking - because of the 'rude' sound/association. For German speakers its probably fine.

I like it. Although I do have an 8 year old Teddy and yes , he's that on his BC. Suits him, he likes it and he's Ted a lot of the time anyway.

I also quite like Rudy. Sonny is good too.

Suppose I just like those kinda names for some reason! They're 'different' but not stupidly outlandish which was my naming criteria

Buddy is not a name. Whatever Jamie Oliver thinks. As a nickname it's OK I suppose.

Canyou, it's the same in Texas where I live, buddy is a nickname for every male child, like "son"..... I've heard a couple of owners yelling "buddy" in the dog park too. Wouldn't be my choice....

Forget the High Court judge test, Buddy doesn't pass the adult-human-who-works-in-an-office test.

Ditto Bunny for a girl (despite that opinion being shouted down on MN a few weeks ago).

Iheart, I'm sure his family knew that it was more usual as a nickname rather than a name on a birth cert when they gave it but still love it and don't care what I think at all and more power to them. I just wouldn't use it myself and if someone asks my opinion on a baby names thread, I will give it.

I'm also sure your 4 year old relative will have plenty of people asking him or his parents "what is Buddy short for?" or "What is Buddy a nickname for" or "what is your real name?" as he gets older. I doubt it will bother him or his family much at all but it would have bothered me.

Buddy isn't a name. Sorry but it isn't. Where I live (east coast USA) it is what parents/adults call their small children as a term of endearment "hey buddy want to put your left shoe or your right shoe on first". That kind of thing. It is like calling your daughter Honey (apologies to all those on MN who called their daughters Honey).

Buddy Holly's name wasn't actually Buddy.

Rudi is nice enough. Rudi Guiliani, ex Mayor of NYC is actually named Rudolph.

I have a small family member called Buddy. He's an actual human child. It suits him. I think it's cool.

I know two young lads called Buddy.
Both are dogs - a Jack Russell and a golden retriever.

So for a baby.... no. Sorry.
