Emilia. Help.

This is my dd2's name. She's nearly 8 months. I adore the name; the sound, the spelling, the fact it's not too popular. But it bloody drives me nuts when people write down Amelia. I know it's only a subtle difference in sound but I'm always correcting people. She gets Emmy for short. Is she too going to have a lifetime of correcting people or be annoyed with us for choosing it? Wwyd, change it to Amelia before she turns 1 or leave it?

Thanks all. I'm confident we chose right. IMO, Emilia is a beautiful name and I'm glad we're sticking with it.

Keep it unless it is truly bothering you.

I have an unusual first & last name which everyone misspells. Once people are corrected, they remember it & don't get it wrong again because its uniqueness makes it so unforgettable.

Calling your DD Emilia, which is a gorgeous name btw, could be the best gift you have given her.

LI dont understand the confusion either, Tea Leave it the way it is especially as she already has an established N.N. If you do change the spelling to Amelia then the N.N Emmie will not make much sense and it will become a completely different name. Like Amilie is nothing like Emily.

I think its lovely and my friend mispronounces my dds name to this iyswim
my friend is Polish and it sounds so lovely when she says it that I didn't want to correct her, but she insists I do.

Minionionionion - My 3yo DD calls her big sister Emilia Milia or Mimi, it's very cute. My brothers call her Meelsy which I don't like so much!

We have and Emilia and she loves it (so far) at 3 she will correct people and say Eeee milia and when she says her name the E is very clear which helps.

She has been Emmy, Ems, Milia and Mimi and still prefers Emilia over any of the nicknames.

Around the 8 month mark I had similar doubts if it's any consolation - what does your Dp think?

My daughter is Emilia. It did annoy me at first when people mispronounced it or mispelled it and I thought sometimes I should have gone with Emma. She's 6 now and loves her name, and happily corrects people on the spelling and pronounciation. :) Don't change it.

I have to correct people all the time about the spelling if my name- it's mildly irritating but I tend not to even notice now!

I have a Scottish name and either get the Irish spelling or the I and l mixed up but I like having a unique name.
I wouldn't change it I just glad since I got married I don't have to spell my surname

Don't change it, me my DH and DD all have unusually spelt names and I always have to correct people on it ALL THE TIME. But I wouldn't change it for the world, we like being different and we going to name our second DD with an usually spelt name when she arrives in February.

Emilia is beautiful!

Don't change it, especially if she's known as Emmy! It's a beautiful name. (Personally, I say the two names differently)

I had a really uncommon maiden name and spent 23 years spelling it for people it didn't really bother me but I did look forward to changing to my more common married name. I get asked just as much to spell my married name. So I would leave it.

OP, do you pronounce it Em-ill-ee-ya or Em-eel-ee-ya?

I know someone who called their child Aemilia because they didn't want her to be amongst hundred of Amelias. But they pronounce it exactly the same as Amelia. Confused

because it happens the other way around, Amelias are mistakenly addressed as Emilia

or you can choose a name that is pretty straightforward like Coral only to find people confuse it with Carol

Nope. There are a world of names that don't make life difficult for their owners. And the OP has already had a taste of what the next 80 years will be like for her dd and it "bloody drives her nuts". Why would you do that to your child if you don't have to? If changing a single letter that makes practically no difference at all to how the name sounds - if it did the problem wouldn't arise-would make life that little bit easier?

By your logic Hakult all our children would be called John or Jane. Now that would be tedious. Oh hang on a minute, you couldn't call them that because they may be spelt Jon or Jayne.

Errrm Hakluyt because your newborn doesn't pipe up and say "Emilia? No way, I want the other spelling!" or vice versa. Everyone's name choices are about their own preferences, not their baby's. It's a massive assumption to make that all children want to be called the most normal, easiest-spelt version of anything - I would much rather have an unusual name for example.

Unless your kids are called "boy child"/"girl child" until their are old enough to decide for themselves, you're guilty of the exact same thing.
