Where are all the baby Alices?

It's a name we're considering but after growing up with a massively popular name and all the irritations that come with that myself, I'm slightly put off by how quickly it's jumping up the rankings. It's gone from 50th in 2007 to 27th last year.

Having said that, the youngest I know personally is a teenager. So where are all the baby Alices?! Do you know any and where in the country are they?

I've got a baby Alice Smile. She's the only one I've met so far (London, and I go to a lot of baby and toddler activities). I know one 10 year old, one in her 30s, and one who'd be 100+ if she were still alive. That sort of spread is pretty much the definition of a classic.

I was a bit put off by the fact that it's rising in popularity, but I don't think it's the next Isla or Isabelle. And as a PP said, at 27 in last years list that's about 2000 babies in the whole country. DS had number 10 in our region for his year of birth and I've only ever met 2 of a similar age.

Thank you everyone! DH and I do both love Alice, making it one of the only names we agree on! It does seem like people know a real mix of ages which I like as it does make it more timeless even as it becomes more popular. You're also right about the vast number of different girls' names there are to choose from now. When it was this high in the mid 90s there were over 2000 babies named Alice each year.

Akorda Emily is also on our list but 3rd in the rankings is a bit high for me, especially as it doesn't sound great with our surname. If only DH would agree to Vivienne Smile

I was surprised to see it so high on the lists when I last checked. None in DS1's year. I have only met one 1 year old with that name.

But there are so many different girls' names that you are unlikely to get the concentration of names in one place as you are with boys' names (i.e. more boys have the same names iyswim) So , as someone said above, number 25 (or whatever it was) will only translate into 1500 names or so per year which really isn't many.

It is a classic which will always sound fine - e.g. to me, Emily still sounds lovely even though it's been in the top 10 for years and years.

I wanted to call my youngest DD Alice. She's now almost 4. ExDP wouldn't allow it because it was his "horrible Grandmas first name" Grin Hmm

I know a 5 year old Alice and a 6 year old one. Both are the only Alice in their school year of 60

I know 1 teenage Alice. We are ttc for DC2 at the mo and hope to use Alys if we have a girl (we live in Wales)

I know one baby, and she is Alys (we are in Wales). It's my 4yo dd's middlenname though in English spelling (after my grandmother). Lovely name!

The youngest I know is 4, although I know a 3 year old whose middle name is Alice. The oldest I know is in their 40s (me). S/W a Yorkshire. I know a lot of 3 year old girls and most of them are called Amelia or Lexi.

If you look on the Office of National statistics they break down names given to babies each year by region.

I have an 18 year old Alice. I don't know any others. She was always the only Alice at school, even at high school.
I have worked in early years for over 20 years and I have only cared for 1 Alice in all that time.

I've just remembered when I had given birth and they brought me up to the ward the auxiliary who gave me my lunch was also called Alice :)

Molly its not a rare name. You could have An alice too!

I prefer the spelling Alys.

I know one baby. Two adults.

If its ranked in the 20s with the combined spelling of Alys there would be about 2000 a year perhaps. That's not that many.

A good friend has just called her new baby Alice. Gutted as that was our name of choice for a girl last time (we had a boy) and would have been our name for this one if it's a girl.
