I immediately think of Aubrey Bearsdley. Then I think of his frankly bizarre erotica.

I'm not sure I'd use the name, just because there aren't many other connotations, and if you choose something very unusual, the few famous examples of it tend to loom large. Hence why we don't hear of many little Myras or Adolfs these days.

I think it's sad that it might be forgotten as being a boy's name. As a girls's name it seems so brash to me.

I love it for a girl. It's okay for a boy.

Adults in the UK might see it as a boy's name but children won't. By the time they grown up it will be recognised widely as a girl's name and probably almost forgotten as a boy's.

It's already top 50 at least for girls in the US I think and, although I don't know the cyrrent UK rankings and it isn't high for either, I think it's more popular for girls than boys over here too by now.

As others said there's Pitch Perfect. And, slightly older than that, there's a very popular and beautiful children's book called 'Love Aubrey' about a girl whose mother has had a breakdown and abandoned her.

I meant all names I had mentioned.... not ALL names in the world ever. That would be ridiculous! Barry is definitely a boys name!

I like it but it's definitely a boy's name. As is Elliot.

Avery and Ashley could go either way I think.

Great name... an old name and also the name of one of England's finest illustrators. It is masculine.

Sorry for me Aubrey is strictly a boys name. Audrey for a girl but Aubrey for a boy. But then again I have strong view on Ashley too (only for boys).

I really like it, it sounds so much more of a girls name to me tbh. I LOVE Elliott for a girl and using it. I also really like Ellis and Avery....all names are unisex. If you like it for a girl go for it, it's very pretty.

My former neighbour in leafy muswell hill was named Aubrey. A tall good looking rasta. Think idris elba type. He used to 'steal' my cat when I was at work and feed her
cheese. cat always came home
chilled smelling of the 'herb'. Very cool guy. I think of it as a fab edgy masculine name.

I've only ever heard it as a boy's name and then only used by very posh parents who want to make it very clear how posh they/their child is. Grin

I must be in the minority, I only see it as a girls name, and a little girls name at that, not an "old mans name". Which surely most of the current naming trends are old ladies names anyway?

I have the same associations as NorbertDentressangle, it's the name of a purple nosed, cravat wearing luvvie.

It's not a girls name. Anyone who names their daughter Aubrey is a ninny.

I've never heard Aubrey used for a girl until this thread.

The only Aubrey I know is an elderly man.

It's traditionally a male name: Aubrey Beardsley or Auberon Waugh. Or (as earlier poster said) Oberon King of the Fairies in 'Midsummer Night's Dream'.

English version of Alberich. He was rather fierce character in German mythology with later unpleasant associations, or so it is alleged: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alberich

People may feel that the modern use of Aubrey has left all this behind, however.

I know an older gentleman with the name. It's awful! Definitely not a baby's/child's name.

Awful name!

It's an old mans name! My cousin and his mrs named their daughter this and then gave her an ridiculous middle name to boot! Poor kid!
