If you gave your DD a very unusual name

Yes she does. She also has a very unusual surname and is an unusual character so it really suits her Smile

If you're going down the unusual route, IMO it's much better to present it as a fait accompli. "We've called her January".

Actually, I'm a firm believer in doing that with any name. Someone will always say "oh, the kid who was sick behind the Christmas tree in my primary school was called Dave" if you say you're thinking of calling your child Dave.

Thanks Zebra DD2 & DD3 have more common names -I often wish we had been more adventurous with their names as well.

I love the name Red. If I had a boy, it would be between Red, Rex or Bear.

I know a female Jude and also have a friend called Tuesday.

Most out-there girls name I have heard is Mitstrel. Had never heard it before or since.

winter those are gorgeous and all go so well together.

Ixia is also really beautiful. Very Egyptian/Persian sounding (to my geographically ignorant ears!).

minge I really like it - how did you come up with it? I worry about facing mixed reactions but I guess it's a live by the sword, die by the sword kind of scenario if you're going down the unusual route.

DD's, you mean, coco? DS has a perfectly normal name which is shortened in a perfectly normal way :o

We do shorten DD's name, but not to the usual shortening (Merry, I suppose, which is lovely and we/she will no doubt use in the future). We shorten it to Mem, which is a version of what my 3yo nephew calls her because he can't pronounce her name :)

Not a dd but my DS is R e d c l i f f e known as red.

We didn't make it public before he was born. Reactions were mixed. But it suits him and there is a story behind it that justifies a made up name in our opinions.

Pretty pointless thread if no one is willing to share.

Your always going to get negative reactions to any name. It's too unusual, too common to old fashioned etc etc

If you and your partner love a name both agree then go for it.

I never told people my names but would drop it in, when they were giving me their own suggestions.

Yes I remember that character! Love it for a girl as it's usually a boy's name, right? I'm sensing a theme of me liking boy's names for girls...

How exactly do you pronounce Afton?

As much as I love January, it doesn't really go with our surname. It was just an example of something a bit unusual, bit out there etc.

I met an adult Afton this year. She was absolutely lovely, and beautiful.
