Ethan - common or suitably middle class?

My dh and I love the name Ethan, particularly because we thought it was really unusual, but when we consulted the top baby name lists it appears to have been Top 20 for years (neither of us have ever met an Ethan though). Are we going to find that naming him Ethan means he is one of many of the same name when he gets to school?

Also, being middle class parents, we do not wish to unwittingly bestow a chavvy name on our pfb, but we have no point of reference for Ethan. Is it suitably middle class or does it belong with Kai and Jayden?

Thank you!

I don't think Kevin is that bad. Confused I think it's more hated in the UK than anywhere else.

Aimielea · 20/11/2014 20:17

It's a lovely name I wouldn't class it as any social class

Hell, not help. Assuming op joking slightly but also not wanting to saddle poor dc with a name that becomes the stereotype of a generation, Kevin the teenager style.

I don't understand the obsession with fearing other children will have the same name.

You can't guarentee any child to be the only one in school with their name. Just pick what you like.

My DD has a top 5 name. I love it. We know others with the same name, others locally with the same name, others who will be in her school year with the same name and I really don't think its a big deal.

Choose the name you like and to help with how "common" it is. BTW though, definitely not chav territory with Ethan here, the two I know of are most definitely very MC. I liked it for our ds2, but DH vetoed it. Ds2's eventual name is one that is very high up the top 10.

Auto apostrophe

I teach four Ethan's. Evan is more unusual.
I do hope this is a wind up though.

Careful OP, when you bring class into baby naming it's like throwing a hand grenade.

I'll be honest: Ethan isn't really a middle class name, to my ears.

There are loads of Ethans at my school- secondary school in a deprived inner city in Sunderland area.

sejt · 20/11/2014 20:10

it's a bible name isn't it? I like it.

Chavvy is a really nasty thing to say.

DevonFolk · 20/11/2014 20:07

If you like it, use it. I'm a teacher and haven't come across too many in the last 10 years. I also had a very middle class/private school upbringing and didn't come across any that I can remember!
