Merle is mostly - but not always - used as a girl's name, eg ballerina Merle Park, filmstar Merle Oberon. Often used interchangably with Muriel.

Male version usually - but not aways = Merrill.

Bernard seems to be a very underused name. I've never met one.

Bernie feels like it should fit in with all the old man revival names.

I would look at Eli and think El-ee or El-i. I think you might prefer it pronounced EEl-i?

Merle is often used as a female name - eg famous ballerina Merle Park. It
means 'blackbird'.
