Is the name Ocean for a girl too wierd?

Dp and I struggle to agree on/like the same names. (He thinks my choices are too odd, I think his are too plain.) But the other night we both said we liked the name Ocean for a girl. Is this too wierd to actually call your child?

I'm not keen on Ocean, it sounds very male as well as a bit odd.

What about Atlanta?

I taught an Ocean last year. There are all kinds of (ahem) unusual names at my school, I regale my DC with them.

It is NTMT personally but it's no more weird than Summer, Wednesday, Autumn, Destinee, Angel... all names of children I have known. Like ghostvitruvius says, most kids don't raise an eyebrow tbh at names that I personally boggle at. It's just, y'know, what their mate is called.

58 may been called Ocean that's not all that impressive when 698,512 babies were born in the UK in the same year.

Osian is very popular in Wales and surprisingly so outside of it so Ocean might be misheard for that and also be mistaken for a boy.

Ocean and Orion for twins sounds really lovely :) love that Orion's from Greek mythology.

Just to clarify we're not hippies! 58 girls so far this year, so its not so uncommon then. I do really like it, I can't remember who said it but I agree that it might seem odd to people at first on paper, but that after they've met the child it wouldn't . I think its one of those names where it would either really work and sound lovely or wouldn't suit the child at all.

Nice to hear such positive comments aswell as the negatives :) didn't that it would be everyones cup of tea

Nope not too weird. I have heard it a few times. I know twins called Ocean (girl) and Orion (boy) they have an older sister called Summer and a younger brother called River. Their parents aren't hippy types either.

I know two, a boy and a girl. I'm not keen on it myself but I wouldn't raise an eyebrow, there are worse names.

It's fine, there were 58 female Ocean's born in 2014 and 10 male Ocean's so it is not unheard of.

I'd think you were of the hippy sort and I'd opt for a very conventional middle name, something like Ocean Elizabeth so she had the option of a name to hide behind if she ever wanted not to have the "Ocean?" conversations.

There is also Sanskrit /Hindu Usha (Oo-sha) ; it means 'dawn', which is rather lovely.

If your a hippy lentil weaving sort you can probably pull off introducing your little Ocean otherwise it just comes off as too try hard.

I remember one of East 17 called their daughter Ocean. I got the information from the unofficial annual circa 1994 so can't verify it but at the time (I'd have been about 9?!) I thought it was a nice name Grin

I knew an Ocean a few years back . She would be at secondary school now. Lovely girl. Very much a creative free spirit that tried hard across the curriculum.
I'm in a northern town where names like this usually get raised eyebrows too.

I work in education and haven't noticed the teasing/bullying about names that MNers often seem to fear Confused I do live in a big multicultural city though.

Sounds a bit like the Irish name Oisín. Not sure I've spelt that right. It's usually a boys name.

Surely if you have to ask a bunch of strangers if the name you've chosen for your baby is "too weird" the question has basically answered itself? for clarity, yes it is

I would pronounce Océanne 'oh-say-anne' but I'm not French...
