Which names do you IRRATIONALLY dislike?

This is not certainly not meant to be a "bitchy names thread". The emphasis is on the word IRRATIONAL. i.e. there are some names that are perfectly innocuous, lots of other people like them, I've known some lovely people with those names (so no obvious bad associations) BUT for some reason I've always disliked them. Would be interested in hearing anyone else's bugbear names!

ANNA - just too symmetrical, and (to my ears) smug and boring

LUCINDA - I like Lucy, but for some reason the "inda" really turns me off this name

Anything with "BELLE"on the end.Annabelle, Isabelle etc Pretty on paper, but I just don't like the sound for some reason

BEATRICE again irrational, but the combination of sounds just doesn't do it for me, it does the opposite of "trip off the tongue"

This is not meant to be in any way offensive. My 3 children have really "Marmite" names, and I don't mind at all that some people don't like them.
I just think everyone finds that certain sounds "jar" with them. Do others find this?

On a different note, the Baby Names topic is brilliant and I have been a long time lurker!

Wow, have just popped in to find this thread still going!

As pp said, so interesting to hear the strong negative effects some names have on people - for no particularly good reason! And, yes, it does make name-choosing really hard(combined with the fact that you have to choose a name when still in a post-natal fog! Always seems unfair, that. But another thread for another day!)

Interesting that only a few seem to share my hatred of "smug, too symmetrical" Anna but lots of people dislike Annabel. And I am still amazed at the reaction to Alice and Charlotte! I also love many of the boys names people perceive as being "wet"!
Well, if we all liked the same names, there would be 10 x "boy's/girl's name" in each class, so it's great that we don't!

I hate the name William.

I always feel that I should like it and have no idea why I don't, but I really do hate it.

And another one who doesn't like Lucy or Charlotte.

My name is on here - not surprised in a way as have always disliked it (sorry mum!) and assume a lot of people do despite its recent popularity Hmm

I'm with the posters who irrationally dislike harsh surnamy type names for girls and boys - Hunter, Blake, McKenzie for example. I recently met a little 'Hunter' and I couldn't associate this tiny baby lying in a pram with such a hard sounding name somehow..

But I love Alice!!

Funny how names have such an effect on people! No wonder some of us found it so stressful naming our children.. Grin

I dislike posh names. So all the Toby, Ptolemy, Arabella sort of things.

Most irrational though is a loathing of Matthew, Philip, Nicholas and Benjamin as wet.

All my dc have made an appearance so far on this thread.

I think my own name is truly horrible. I can't imagine what possessed my parents.

Although my grandmother sulked because they wouldn't call me Barbara (Babs!) after her. I am thankful for that. No offence to any Babs out there, but I'm very glad it's not my name. My other grandmother was a Betty and I wouldn't have wanted to be one of them either, but at least there are possibilities with Elizabeth.

I'm surprised DS2's name hasn't been mentioned on here yet. It's usually a dead cert for names MN hates.

I have always hated Amanda. And then I met an Amanda who proved how right I was..

It DOES sound like 'A man Dad' and just sounds boring and weak and 'fluffy'.

I hate 'Manda' as well. I like Miranda though weird .

I don't like Andrew. It's just a funny name that doesn't sound like a name at all to me.

Amanda - "a man dad". Also never known a nice one which doesn't help,

Persephone - pretentious, too long and I just say 'Percy phone' in my head.

Wilf - like saying wolf when you have a lisp

Chris - just so dull!

My name has been mentioned a few times on here, I thought it was boring when I was growing up (I wanted to be called samantha) but have got over it,

I used to hate my name which is plain and classic, and love my Sister's which seemed much more unusual. I still like her name, but I get on okay with mine now (neither have been mentioned in this thread but I don't think I'd take offence if they were).

moxon I know, my mind works weird.

I don't like Simon either. I'm trying to think why. It sounds harsh and sour to me. Yes that's it. It just sounds unpleasant and harsh.

I'm surprised at the Alice hatred. It isn't a YES yes, name of mine but I do like it and I didn't know anybody didn't.

I don't like Xena. It's a family member's name, but to me it just seems a bit...Out there?

I don't like Edward either. Another childhood thing, I had a friend who I constantly called 'Headward'. I knew the word 'head' and had always been told to pronounce my 'H'.

Do you think sometimes we hate a name because the first person we knew called such name, wasn't a nice person or we had an issue with their name for some reason?

I don't like the name because I'm intimidated by it.

Alice is the pretty, leggy one with the pink furry pencil case and a eraser that smells of bubblegum.

Seth - sounds very slithery, reminds me of snakes and the Bible.

Irrational because one of my favourite fictional characters is Seth Bullock, the sheriff from 'Deadwood' series (swoon).
