Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
Thewrongmans · 25/10/2014 05:47

I think it makes you sound pretty uneducated.

mathanxiety · 25/10/2014 05:43

Your cousin sounds wonderful. Good luck to her dealing with cancer Flowers. I think it's a great idea to honour her by using the name Annabel.

feelinglostjess · 25/10/2014 05:29

I've just read this whole thread.

OP

baby.about.com/od/Baby-Girl-Names/qt/Belle-Names.htm

(Jezabel is on the list)!

Jessabelle is an alternative but IMO for avoiding the negative connotations of Jezabel, It's too similar.

For what It's worth, I love the name Jezabel. Even though I studied history and knew the biblical connotations, I have never used Jezabel as a noun or heard anybody in my friend/family connection use it as one, either so I can see how the OP may have been similar to me like that, and not realised how strongly other people feel about it.

I wouldn't name a child Jezabel, but I may have stretched to 'Jessabelle' or 'Jessa-Belle' as a middle name, if I really wanted something similar.

AdoraBell · 25/10/2014 04:19

Sorry, didn't see the last cople of pages (see, too tired)

Glad you've decided to name her after someone who inspires you.

Best wishes for you and new baby when she arrives.

AdoraBell · 25/10/2014 04:05

Not aimed at OP

Someone mentioned reclaiming the name, feminist stance/cause (sorry, too tired)

That's perfectly fine if a woman, feminist or not, decides to change her name to Jezebel, but a baby can't make that decision.

It's become a noun, so no.

Other biblical names have negative connotations (Cain, Seth, Magda) but have not become nouns. You don't hear people say 'He's a bit of a Cain'.

Other names are nouns, but they are either not negative (Jack, Bill) or the name is so common that the noun is not the first thing that springs to mind (John, Charlie nobody has said that since the '80s, surely ) or have dropped out of use (Dick)

It has become unusable, along with Judas and Hitler (admittedly a surname but lots of people have surnames as first names)

It's rather a shame, because it's a lovely name but not common enough to overcome the individual. A bit like when you hear 'Myra' you think 'Hindley' but when you hear 'Ian' you don't think 'Brady'

Jezabel isn't a fictitious person, there is historical evidence for her existence, if nothing else, not that it matters. The bible is hugely influential and I wouldn't saddle a kid with the name Goldilocks or Cinderella either, no matter how pretty they sound.

BlueGreenHazelGreen · 25/10/2014 00:02

I think Annabel is lovely OP and a wise choice.

I'm sorry you are feeling a bit bashed about, but on re-reading the thread I think that we all were just genuinely shocked that you might make what I think a lot of people would consider a regrettable decision. I think you'll look back in future and be relieved you chose Annabel.

KlokkenVin · 24/10/2014 23:53

you were put off the name annabel because your cousin is a single parent, foster carer and dealing with the big C, but you weren't put off the name Jezebel?

That made me chuckle. I'm a single parent but not a prostitute I wonder if people are ever put off using my name Confused

ImperialBlether · 24/10/2014 23:13

Annabelle is nicer.

Jezebel is just ridiculous. And just because you're pregnant, it doesn't mean you can't be insulted, just the same as anyone on here!!

3luckystars · 24/10/2014 23:04

I love annabel too! Well done for taking all the negative replies on board, I know if it was me I would have been upset but then again I bawled my eyes out over an undercooked sausage when I was pregnant.

Very best wishes to you and your baby girl x

SaucyMare · 24/10/2014 22:47

Well done OP, i have never seen a baby name thread with 100% agreement before.
Annabel is lovely, and people love being named after :)

lornemalvo · 24/10/2014 22:35

Annabel is beautiful.

fairyteepee · 24/10/2014 22:13

Thanks. Were going to find an alternative. May use Annabel, its my cousins name so i was initially put off but as shes a single mum, foster carer and dealing with the big C i think it would be nice to use in her honour as shes an inspiration to me.

3luckystars · 24/10/2014 22:02

I don't think it's a good idea, even if you like the name yourself, I'm sure you can see the reaction it would cause your daughter judging by the posts here.
It really is not a suitable baby name at all, sorry your feelings were hurt I think people were just so shocked that hey thought you were messing.

You probably like it because you would never call someone that name, but as you can see, many other people use it instead of slut so I think you should accept what the posters here are trying to tell you, even if you are a bit offended.

Best of luck with your baby, I hope you find a great alternative.

fairyteepee · 24/10/2014 21:44

Nope i have a long French surname

OP posts:
TinklyLittleLaugh · 24/10/2014 21:42

Is your surname Dingle OP?

fairyteepee · 24/10/2014 21:38

Thanks Tricia i will do. Its a lot easier to take someone's comments on board when its not in between being called dim, cruel and a twat in the same post!

OP posts:
TriciaMcM · 24/10/2014 21:36

OP I agree sometimes the posts in the baby names group in particular can be very mean, but ask some people in real life about the name Jezebel. I think a lot of people are assuming this is a wind up because the name is so commonly used to refer to a prostitute & aren't thinking there is a real person at the other end of the computer.

Look past being offended and take a little while to think about it before using the name.

fairyteepee · 24/10/2014 21:34

"Then we argued" - exactly, why does it have to become an argument with personal insults? And typing something behind an anonymous name on the internet is not to my face.

OP posts:
SecretNutellaFix · 24/10/2014 21:33

Reading the whole thread, I think you started it to cause an argument.

If you like the name use it without becoming defensive and don't be such a twat when you get informed of the 100% negative conotations with it's use.

ThursdayOfTheLivingDead · 24/10/2014 21:26

Just answering your question
should i use it in spite of some of its negative associations?

Seems the overwhelming answer is no.

Roseformeplease · 24/10/2014 21:26

The thing is, you asked for opinions, then you disagreed, then we argued.

Call her what you want. At least we told you to your face it is a stupid idea. Others will be giggling behind your back, and your DD's. Do you really, really want your precious, gorgeous baby to be linked with prostitution?

fairyteepee · 24/10/2014 21:23

I wouldn't be calling her it to make a point. I would call her it because me and my husband think its a lovely name and we dont have the initial reaction that is being shown here. I have not at any point said i am using this name regardless and yet people think they can be so rude. This is supposed to be a site for mums to support each other and, in this section, to chat about names to one another when our non pregnant friends cant be doing with hearing is talk about babies any more. I would never post some of the things i have received here today, i think its a real shame.

OP posts:
squoosh · 24/10/2014 21:20

You don't want to engage with me any further because you're unable to counter my reasons for not using the name.

And yes, pretending the name Jezebel doesn't have unsavoury associations is dim and calling a child Jezebel would most certainly be cruel.

And think about this, this is merely 0.1% of the reaction you will get when you present Baby Jezebel to the world.

Wise up.
