Is my DH right and is Clover awful?

He likes the name in itself, but says she will be bullied etc because of her name and the association with butter. We both work in education and I did get him to admit to not being able to name a single incident of a child being bullied solely because of their name.

I love it, I was a huge fan of 'What Katy Did' and Clover was my favourite.

He says if I can put Clover butter out of business, or find five people who don't think of butter straight away then I can use it...

I immediately thought of What Katy Did. Doesn't remind me of butter because I don't like English butter - didn't even realise it was a brand name. I think it's lovely.

I didn't think of butter or cows, and I think it is nice that you have picked a name with a literary association. I quite like the name myself, but then I do tend to like the idea of wackier names without necessarily thinking they would be a good choice iyswim. This name is for life, not just for the cute baby/toddler stage. Can you really imagine a professional woman with the name Clover? If you can, keep persuading your dh. If not, choose something else.

Sorry, I know two dogs called clover. I think of it as a name for a pet. No reason not to go for it if you like it though!

But - sorry - to me it's a guinea-pig's name.

I love it, and it reminds me of What Katy Did. However DH is firmly in agreement with your DH, and refuses to even consider it for soon-to-be-born DD Sad.

I view it as similar to Flora - I've seen a few people on here calling "margarine" whenever this name is mentioned, but in RL we know a couple of little Floras for whom the margarine connection doesn't seem to be an issue (and I have never thought anything other than "lovely name").

Ok mixed reactions so far- that's not too bad!

My argument was "but we have lurpack!"

Clodagh is his suggestion, but to me that just sounds like someone saying Clover wrong.

I think we'd use Clo as a nn, Chloe is nice, but no Clover!

I think it is very pretty - my first thought is What Katy Did and my second is of the journalist called Clover Stroud.

Admittedly I also think it sounds a bit like a name someone might give a cow, but not in a bad way. Don't think of the butter at all (don't think of margarine with Flora either but think Flora/margarine is a stronger association).

I absolutely love it. Unusual but not wacky. People who meet your dd will associate it with her, not butter. Also it's not even a leading brand anymore, it's not like you're calling her lurpak!
