I know some people like "creative" spellings, and some people think an E at the end of a name = an "ee" sound (like a boy called Alfe pronounced "Alfie") but... no. It's wrong. It goes against all linguistic conventions I can think of in the English language. And it looks illiterate.

I think the OP should put aside how much the El pronunciation bothers her and think instead about what a pain it will be for the bearer of the name.

I don't really care how people pronounce names. For all I know 'Elly' is how 'Elle' is pronounced in Lithuania, or Mauritania.

In theory I love Game of Thrones names that are slight variants of common names like Jojen and Sansa (although I would want to see how the series played out before using them on an actual person and am probably only brave enough to give them to a pet )

I think the only issue is that in the UK Elle is generally pronounced El so the OP will just have to decide how much of a bother it is that people are going to assume it is pronounced Elle when they read the name.

Because most people in the UK pronounce Elle the French way, you're going to have to keep correcting them if you prefer it pronounced Ell-ee. Hopefully most people will learn and remember quickly.

However, people will always make mistakes with names. My DD2 has a classic name spelt in the classic manner. At hospital recently I told the receptionist her name, who then said 'No, you mean "totally different pronunciation of same name"'. Um, no I don't.

Elle is pronounced El. If you want your DD to be called Ellie then you can use Ellie or Elly or, if you must be creative in your spelling, Ellee.

Alternatively you could move somewhere where Elle is pronounced Ellie (not anywhere they speak English or French).

Or you could let you DD go through life with a name that is constantly misspelt and mispronounced.

Which is why I have given my DS a very standard English name, which is spelt the same in my mother tongue (just pronounced differently, but we use the different pronunciation according to where we are).

I have an Esme, pronounced Esmee, I had never even heard of the name Esmay before people started calling her that or until I came on here, she doesn't even have the accent on the 'e'. I find most people who say it wrong at first, listen to how I say it, then pick up on how we wish it pronounced, or Esme will correct them! I went with an 'ee' sound as my PIL have a habit of putting it on all GC names, we didn't use Jack for a boy because of it, so they call her 'Es' now instead - aaaargh! Also with my own name I have had to live with the constant mispronouncement all my life so I guess I don't see it as a big deal. Change the spelling if you want to, we changed the spelling of my sons short name using a Y as oppose to IE as I preferred it that way, he was about a month old but it's his long name on the birth certificate anyway.

I would assume someone who calls their child Elle pronounced Ellie is either

a) a bit thick knows no French OR

b) trying and failing to be interesting or unusual - along the lines if calling your child Jorja instead of Georgia
