How is Hermione viewed these days?

Is Harry Potter still too recent? I hope not because I love it and even dh agrees! It would make FOUR on our girl list! (Still none properly on the boys... Maybe Monty... Suggestions welcome...)

But we don't really want an overwhelming Harry Potter link. A bit is ok...

I also have a Hermione and she is nearly 4!! Our nn for her is Mimi, but since shes been at pre school she tells me 'no my names Hermione'. We dont know any others either so we love it!

I'm a huuuuge Harry Potter fan so I couldn't get over that link, but I don't know if kids will be quite so into it by the time they are older? I was 7 when the first book was published so I grew up with the series.

I have an almost 5 year old Hermione and I still love hher name as does she. We've had an overwhelmingly positive response to it. Yes theres a HP association but that quickly fades once people actually meet her and then it just becomes her name. Pronunciation is still a bit hit and miss but it's easily corrected. We use the nickname 'miney' occasionally but she mostly prefers her dull name.

I think it's awesome, and I don't think Harry Potter is so recent that people will necessarily think of them straight off, no one goes "Harry? like Harry Potter?" so I don't really see why anyone would do that with Hermione, maybe some of the more unusual names they might though...

The first book came out in 1997 which quite frankly makes me feel old!

Daholster - I love Kaitlin and like the K too but sadly it's a bit similar to my own name and certainly the shorterned version of my name. Does go nicely with Hermione though!

We like it with a K, makes it easier for her to choose a shorter nick name and less associated with the direct Celtic link, which we don't have. We just love the sound of the name wasn't asking for comment

Lol ilovechops!!! I love your last comment! We live on the Surrey/Hampshire border. We are not posh... Middle class I suppose yes, but I think most people in our area wouldn't naturally drop the H. Brilliant thought!

Congratulations on expecting dd2! How lovely. Our dd is called Kaitlin, and we think Kaitlin would go with Hermione fine. We have no recent Celtic connection and preferred the K for using Katy, and Kitty, which are nns. Maybe when she is older she might use Kate. Or Lin, if she hates the others!

If it's any help, our other thoughts at the moment are Felicity, Rosie (not sure what she'd be short for) and Poppy for a dd2. If it's a boy, we're stuffed!!!

I have a Hermione. She's almost 3.

We were unsure because of the reasons you mention but now I absolutely love it and so does she. She's really proud of her name. Bad points are: there is a HP link (we don't mind this) but this also means we find all young ish people (under 30) always love it because of the HP link. Older people (over 50) sometimes don't know it and struggle with pronunciation. We've had Harmony, Hermanie blah blah but really most people know it because of HP and I see that as a positive. It's hard to shorten, we have nick names but they're not related to Hermione really more pet names. Her nursery called her mi mi (pronounced my my) but she corrects them and says my name is Hermione!! I don't mind what she goes by in yrs to come but she seems happy with her long name. It also suits her surname but admittedly probs makes her sound quite posh as we have a double barrel surname. BUT we aren't posh and I don't really mind what people think anyway.

One other thing, sibling names are tricky...it's a big name to match up to. We are expecting DD2 likely a girl and we are struggling to fine anything that goes with it. We have one for a boy though.

And we know no other Hermione's which she loves already at nearly 3.

I'd say go for it. It's strong, pretty and traditional and also unusual.

One last comment, where do you live?! One thing I don't like is in certain areas people miss the 'H' of it making her 'ermione' which is awful so I guess it depends where you love too if you think people may miss pronounce!

People will think Harry Potter rather than The Winter's Tale nowadays (I'd imagine)

But they're also more likely to have heard of it and be able to spell and pronounce it, thanks to HP.

Actually I think HP has done Hermione the world of good, people know how to pronounce it now, until then most people said Hermy 1.
