If me and partner ever have a boy he wants to call it Dave, and I'm very against this name as I think it's not suitable for a baby it's like an old man's name, I love the name tommy!!!!

dh and I are League of Gentlemen fans, but our children refused to watch it. I think Dave is too common a name to be so tightly associated with a particular catchphrase. 'Everyone's Dead, Dave' from Red Dwarf and 'I'm sorry I can't do that, Dave' from 2001 come to my mind as much as 'Hello Dave' from LoG. Putting Tommy into Google gets lots of link from what looks like a terrible move about a 'stupid' Tommy. Relatively widely used names are going to have lots of associations, some of which may come about after your child is born with nothing you can do about it.

To me David/Thomas are pretty much in the same ball park, with Dave/Tom very likely in teens/adulthood and Davie/Tommy as childhood options.

I prefer David and Thomas to Dave and Tommy, at least on the birth certificate.

As for Dave being an old man name - there are 2 David's at the DC's nursery. At least one of them is likely to get called Dave at some point.

Nobody will remember LoG in 6 or 7 years, not kids, anyway.

I don't particularly like Dave, though, and would prefer David.

My brother is David - mum hates Dave and insisted that he be a Davey. Ofc all his friends call him Dave, but he is Davey to his family. I like it!

I love it too. Went for a similar name in style (70's schoolboy I guess) for DS (2) and have not regretted it. I love Dogger though! I nearly went for Nick/ Nicky after the little boy in the Mog books.

David is a great, strong name for a man, and Davey is a sweet shortening for a littl'un. I honestly don't think The League of Gentlemen's "Hello Dave" is a ubiquitous catchphrase and shouldn't put you off!

I agree Davie sounds more child appropriate than Dave, but that's only because I over thinking it!

I have a David. To be honest I don't like Dave and it almost put me off using the name but (a) I thought it was a bit control freaky to worry about nicknames and (b) I know adult Davids so figured it wasn't inevitable that he would end up Dave.

He is 1 now and my DD of course calls him Dave.

David is a totally normal solid name.

Better than something that sounds like toilet cleaner or a made up name that people is a name.

David and the nickname Dave are both Great.

I'm not keen on Tom, Thomas or Tommy. Here, in Scotland you would run the risk of him being called Tam.

I only have a daughter at the moment and I think in general girls are easier to name, but if I do ever have a son I intend on naming him something which works for a boy and then into adulthood and also in formal/informal contexts so David/Dave, Thomas/Tom, Stephen/Steve etc are perfect IMO.

I'm not so sure of Dave on a baby, I do like David though. He could shorten it to Dave when he's an old man. Smile It feels about the same as Bob and Robert to me.
