Yes, it can get confusing. Two of the Sophies share the same surname initial!

Oh god Sophie's. Dd2 has 4 friends named sophie/Sophia dd2 has 4 named eve. Sorry but it is dull not to mention confusing I can barely keep up with ever changing friendships I have no hope if they all called the same bloody name!

Oh I love margaret/maggie. That's a good example of a decent proper name that is underused.

My grandmothers had hideous names, adored them both but not saddling my dds with those nor would they have wanted me to!

There are over 1000 boys names and as many girls names to choose from!

Why, therefore, do so many of us choose the same few ones? Names should identify us, and life would be more interesting if we all made more use of all the lovely names out there.

There are 3 Harrys and 2 Sophies in our scout group of 16. Can get confusing sometimes!

My DS is Sam, which is common, and my DD is Margaret, which isn't. :)

I don't know what I'm going to name DC#3. So far the frontrunner is William...good thing I've got til spring to decide!

NewClassic Isaiah and Elijah are overdone in the states. :)

So is any form of Isabelle. Lovely name, but unusable now. Ditto Olivia. For boys, Jake.

My DS has a name mentioned a few times here. I couldn't care less what people think! It's a family name that's been used for hundreds of years.

I love it. My DS could have been called anything though, it wouldn't have mattered, he's that awesome

All the popular names are objectively "nice" though. They are not ugly sounding. Some will date, but some are classic.

I'm not sure what the problem is with having a more common name.

I would much rather grow up as a "jack" than some way-out name my parents chose to be different which earned me a lifetime of raised eyebrows, and correcting of spellings.

BTW: I don't live in London. And I don't have a child called Jack!

If a name is nice, it doesn't matter how popular it is.

My name is unusual because it's ugly.

DD has a pretty name that I didn't hear often, but now hear all the time when I'm out and about with her.

I'm actually relieved by it.

....are the popular ones around here. My own DD has a very popular/common name not yet mentioned on this thread (after a dear relative) and my other DC has a more unusual name. I sincerely wish I'd given my second child a name similar to my first as I'm weary of having to spell it and people still get it wrong all the time.

Wow, I haven't seen either of my dd's names here yet. Don't know whether this is a stealth boast or whether I'm just unfashionable.

Kerala, same applies to fashion really. Once a certain trend promoted by designers has entered enough peoples consciousness it becomes more likeable and continues to filter down to more people.

If i think about my dcs name objectively then yes she is named after her great gm but if her name hadnt already increased in popularity and entered my consciousness would i have picked it? Would i have named my dd Gertrude in honour of her great gm? Thats something for me to think about!

DC1 name has been mentioned frequently on this thread. He's 8 and when he was born I didn't know a single other child with his name. The name was definitely popular in England but not in Scotland. More likely to hear it up here now, though usually toddler age boys. Don't give a flying fig if people think it's boring/popular etc. I still love it and that's all that matters.

To those who think it's a bitchy thread - you just have to make sure that the next baby name short list you post on Mumsnet includes Persephone and StJohn (pronounced Sinjin apparently), and all will be well with the world.

No - tedium is the top 10. The names I mentioned are not that popular but still "proper" names countering the "if it's not top 10 it's princess moonunit brigade" there are other options. And I'm entitled to my opinion over used names are dull and lose all their charm IMO. I have one myself. What's fascinating is why generations all pick the same names

She has thank you twofalls! Polly is a cool name and grace is a lovely classic. I wouldnt say either are very common polly especially so

Doesn't upset me. I've got a Samuel, mentioned on here quite a few times, and a Leo, which I'm surprised not to have seen mentioned yet, as I think it was about number 20 when he was born. We chose their names because we liked them. Actually, I had a mad bit when pregnant when I was pushing for Aloysius when my Sam was born, and I'm kind of glad that got vetoed...

Names go in trends. Right now it's most of the above and old lady/man names.

Back in the 70's it was Michael, Darren, Chris, Stephen, Dean, Simon or Claire, Kelly, Michelle, Sarah, Joanne. Add Louise or Jane as a middle name just like Rose or May is now.

There's nothing wrong with the names, it's just trends and nothing to worry about. Myself and my siblings have names that easily date us to late 70's/early 80's, so do DH and his siblings. I do wish that my parents could've thought a bit outside the top 10 but it's not a massive issue and doesn't bother most people.
